A 19-month hiatus from equestrian events cast a shadow on her path, slated to persist until January 14, 2025. This suspension, ordained by the Fédération Équestre Internationale (FEI), found its grounds in a series of three whereabouts failures within a single year. The revelation left the equestrian world perplexed, pondering the journey that led to this unexpected turn. The International Testing Agency (ITA) confirmed her suspension.
The matter was resolved through an agreement on consequences as per Article 8.3.1 of the FEI Anti-Doping Rules for Human Athletes (FEI ADRHA) and an equivalent provision in the World Anti-Doping Code. Karlsson’s eligibility for a two-year suspension was determined under article 10.3.2 of the FEI ADRHA. This article offers a potential reduction of one year based on her level of fault. Her results will be invalidated from November 20, 2022, until the commencement of her suspension on June 15, 2023. This is a major setback for Karlsson, as she was one of the most prominent equestrians and shares a close relationship with Sweden as well.

Mathilda Karlsson was born in Sri Lanka and adopted by a Swedish couple at the tender age of three months.
