In equestrian sports, a multitude of factors play an important role in standing the equine partner to stand victorious after a race. From lane placement to starting velocity, there is a hoard full of factors that come into play. Along similar lines, the distance from the starting gate to the finish line also matters the most. Some horses perform well at short-distance races while others show a rise in long-distance. Likewise, George Papaprodromou trained a four-year-old colt the change in distance showed the result and altered the curve of his career.
On 1st October, at Santa Anita, a one and a one-and-a-quarter mile race was scheduled. It was a Grade 2 $201,500 John Henry Turf Championship. The race witnessed the participation of horses trained and owned by some staunch names in the equestrian sports realm. The 2022 winner Masteroffoxhounds also took part in the race.

According to paulickreport, Balladeer arrived at the event after winning his previous race at Kentucky Downs with 106 Beyer speed figures. Balladeer was to be ridden by three-time Kentucky Derby winner and Hall of Fame jockey Victor Espinoza for the first time. Prior to this race, Balladeer had three wins in his seventeen career starts, with two of them coming this year at allowance races.
At the race, Balladeer took the lead and settled himself with a nice pace. Behind him was last year’s winner Masteroffoxhounds trailing by about four lengths. Balladeer completed the quarter mile in 23.36 seconds, a half mile in 47.41, and a three-quarter mile in 1:12.07.
Masteroffoxhounds started to chase the leader and came close by decreasing his lead to less than a half-length. But, there was still a lot in Balladeer who waved off the challenge in the last stage of the race and won by half a length. Balladeer completed the race in 1:58.94. This was his career’s first stakes win. Speaking on the horse the jockey said, “He was strong, He lugged out a little bit. I was trying to control him without fighting too much“.
He viewed that his pace was faster than required but he was comfortable with it. The trainer was excited by his colt’s maiden stakes win and his efforts with him paid off.
