Over the years, the sporting world has witnessed a number of iconic comeback announcements. Michael Jordan’s legendary “I’m back,” announcement sent shockwaves through the basketball world. While Jordan used a fax machine to inform the Chicago Bulls franchise of his comeback, technology has significantly evolved since then.

In today’s modern age, when the internet and social media are easily accessible, athletes have a much bigger platform than before. Utilizing his social media platform, one British Olympian announced his triumphant return to competitive diving after two year hiatus and informed fans what made him come out of retirement.

In a heartwarming and candid six-minute video posted on his YouTube channel, Daley shared his heartfelt journey back to the pool, filled with emotions, vulnerability, and a burning desire to make a difference at the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics. The turning point in Daley’s decision came during a poignant visit to the US Olympic and Paralympic Museum just before the birth of his son, Phoenix. He was accompanied by his husband, Dustin Lance Black, and son, Robbie. As they toured the museum, Daley was overwhelmed with powerful moments from Olympic history. His gold medal victory at the Tokyo Games flashed before his eyes, and he realized he wasn’t ready to bid farewell to the sport that had shaped his life.

While he had never officially announced his retirement, Daley’s focus had shifted toward his family and his Made With Love knitting line. However, deep down, the yearning to reclaim his place in the diving world persisted. According to an Outsports report, the Olympian’s comeback was also reignited when his son Robbie said, “Papa, I want to see you dive at the Olympics.” In his video, Daley admits his uncertainties and nervousness about his comeback. Yet, he knows it is a chance to set an example for his sons and inspire others to pursue their dreams relentlessly. With his comeback announcement, Daley now sets his sight on next year’s Paris Olympics. However, the Olympian has never been shy of announcing things on social media, and he made a similar announcement on YouTube a decade ago.

Daley’s 2013 coming-out announcement

Just like Daley announced his comeback on YouTube, back in 2013, he used his platform to inform fans about him being in a relationship. With his brave revelation, Tom Daley became one of the first British Olympic athletes to come out, making history with his candidness and authenticity. Only 19 years old back then, the Olympian immediately received support from a host of sports stars and organizations.

Former England soccer player Gary Lineker, Chairman of the Amateur Swimming Association, and gay rights campaigners, Stonewall were all in support of Daley’s newfound happiness. Daley had chosen to share his news through a YouTube video, with the aim of ensuring that his words would not be twisted by the media.
