Sir Chris Hoy has made a moribund announcement, one that has completely bowled over the world. The six-time Olympic gold medalist in cycling took to Instagram to share updates about his health. As the world already knows, Hoy has been dealing with stage 4 prostate cancer since September of 2023. He went on to make the same public in February of 2024. Now, eight long months later, he has given the fandom an update.

Hoy took it to Instagram and posted a lengthy yet emotional video talking about his condition. “You may have heard by now that I’m ready to share that my cancer is stage four. I will be living with it for the rest of my life. Now it’s not the news anyone imagines hearing, and it obviously came as a huge shock,” Hoy noted in the video. But that’s not the only update he gave. Hoy goes on to mention two major things that have been set in motion to build the foundation of his legacy.

So, what exactly are these two things? The first announcement is, as Chris Hoy writes, “a chance to spread the word about my charity event taking place next year called ‘Tour de 4’.” Yes, that is right. Hoy is looking at his diagnosis as a call to action and not an end. The message being put out is clear. A diagnosis is not the end of Hoy’s life; in fact, it is a reminder that there is more to be lived.

Hoy went on to say, “I understand there has been a massive increase in men seeking advice about prostate cancer in the last few days, and that’s been a huge comfort to us to know that hopefully many lives could be saved by early testing.” Preach, Sir Chris Hoy! The initiative is huge, but that is not the only thing he is doing to build his legacy. So, what is the second announcement?

It is not just the charity ride and words that have won hearts around the world. Hoy started the second announcement by saying, “I’m talking to you now because, amidst it all, I’ve made the decision to write it all in a book.” You heard it right, folks. Hoy is venturing into the pits of vulnerability and penning down some intimate chapters on his journey. And of course, his fans have something to say about it!

Turning pain into purpose, Chris Hoy walks on with cheers from the mass!

Have an interesting take?

As one fan rightly puts it, “What a role model to be writing this book at this difficult chapter and always helping others.” Right on, fandom! Hoy’s upcoming book, All That Matters, isn’t just about cancer, despite the name and the circumstances surrounding its release. But also about living through the despair of having to find light again, and above all, it is about coping with the challenges within. So why write a book instead of solely focusing on recovery?

Hoy went on to answer the same and said that writing the book has been “a very important part of how I’ve been able to process this news.” Over the course of dealing with cancer, Hoy seems to have found refuge in words. He went on to call the process “cathartic.” The process of catharsis has led Hoy to the decision to publish. As Chris Hoy fearlessly puts his life and experiences into words. And the world is here for it.

They are not just here for it but also truly believe that the book might just be a work of honesty. So much so that a fan went on to write, “You will help a lot of people with the honesty about your health and the book.” From what Hoy has been saying, the impact and tremors of his initiative and openness are already showing. And it is only set to grow from here. Despite the overwhelming optimism, the fandom is still grieving about the update on Hoy’s health.

One fan, unable to process the news, took it to Instagram and wrote, “Absolutely gutted to hear your diagnosis!!! I really don’t know what to say apart from keep going, keep strong, and keep up that spirit and fight you had every time you stepped into the velodrome!!! I wish you and your family all the best.” It is a sad situation with not much recourse.

But Hoy himself has gone ahead and reassured the fandom that, “We’ve taken time to process it as a family, and I now have a deep resolve to turn this incredibly difficult diagnosis into something more positive that can help not just me but anyone anywhere living with stage four.” As evident from his own words, Chris Hoy is not approaching cancer with the attitude of surrendering. Instead, like Kurosawa’s Ikiru, he is taking the numbered days to create a legacy that matters.

As another fan rightly puts it, “Massive respect. What a classy, selfless, superhuman bloke you really are.” Well, there is no doubt about that. Tour de 4 is no one-time trick that Chris Hoy wants to do. The Tour will be an annual charity bike ride event. And the aim? To raise awareness about Stage 4 cancer. And his mission sure seems to already be in the works.

Chris Hoy is confronting the universal narrative of mortality head-on. And it is resonating with the world at large. As a fan rightly sums it up, “Grace, dignity, humility, intelligence, and so much altruism. Has to be Sir Chris Hoy!” Through his book, his charity event, and his public messages, he’s redefining what it means to live with a terminal illness. Chris Hoy is officially cycling the toughest terrains of life. And the world is rooting for him, now more than ever.
