Doping is something that can tarnish the hard-earned career of a sportsperson. One of the biggest examples of this is the legendary cyclist Lance Armstrong. Lance Armstrong had multiple breaks in his career. Fortunately, he came over the first one when he got diagnosed with Testicular cancer in 1996.

However, the second one took his career to an end. Moreover, it took away all the achievements he earned from 1999 to 2005. He had the record number of Tour de France titles, which he won back-to-back from 1999 to 2005. In 2012, one of his former teammates opened up about how they used to dodge the high-quality doping tests in their career while using performance-enhancing drugs.
How did Lance Armstrong and his teammate pass the tests?
Lance Armstrong made a stronger comeback in 1998 from Testicular cancer. He was in the escalating time of his career in 1996 when he was diagnosed with the disease. His teammate, Tyler Hamilton, opened up on ABC News, Australia in 2012 about the doping episodes in their career.

When the reporter asked, “How did you all avoid detection?” Tyler replied, “Lot of different ways. One way was, you know, the team doctors would tell, you know, what and how much of a certain product you can take? And how many days a tester could still detect it? You know I called in the book called The Glow Time, how long you were glowing.”
He continued, “So with each product, you had a different glow time and depending on how much you took and you know that it very sophisticated teams with sophisticated doctors and you know if you followed their rules you would pass the controls. You know, I passed several hundred controls over my career.”

What kind of drugs were they using?
While talking with ABC News, Hamilton disclosed, if anyone wanted to compete and succeed in his era, they needed to dope. Moreover, he wishes that this is not the case with the current generation of cyclists. Other than that, he also opened up about the major drugs they used during their competitions.

Hamilton said EPO and testosterone were the major drugs they used to enhance their performance. He added, “EPO basically improves your hematocrit, hemoglobin. Basically, you can breathe better. You have more red blood cells which carry oxygen to the muscle. So, you know the better you can breathe, the faster you can ride.”
