As the Gangwon 2024 Winter Youth Olympic Games rounded up to the final stages, the curling arenas witnessed a breathtaking contest between giants like the U.S., Great Britain, Denmark, and Sweden. America was coming off back-to-back victories in the group stages against Czechia and Slovenia, with the latter being a 12-0 sweep. But as they set foot in the knockout stages, the winning streak was about to be broken.

Just Like America, Great Britain also entered the knockout stages with back-to-back victories, that too against stronger teams like Germany and Canada. However, before the two rivals could clash, the U.S. got knocked out of the semi-final.

Great Britain takes 2nd straight curling gold at Gangwon 2024

America faced Denmark in the Semifinals on 1st February and lost by a score of 5-6. Wendling Ella and Paral Benji starred in the U. S jersey with 30.4cm and 199.6cm draws respectively. Schmidt Katrine and Schmidt Jacob steered Denmark to victory with respective draws of 64.2cm and 71.0cm. In the 2nd semifinals, Great Britain took down Sweden to win with a 6-5 score.

It was for a sensational 3.1 cm draw from Callie Soutar that led Britain to the finals against Denmark in the Mixed Doubles Gold Medal Game. It was an enthralling competition between the two sides that saw Britain win their 2nd straight curling gold medal in the Youth Olympics. Brewster Ethan led the way for Britain’s 7-6 victory with a draw of 70.6cm while Jacob and Katrine again led the way for Denmark. As Britain took the gold and Denmark settled for the silver, U.S. curlers faced Sweden for the bronze medal.

U. S fight for Youth Olympic bronze

The losing semifinalists U. S and Sweden faced each other in the Mixed Doubles Bronze Medal Game. It turned out to be a one-sided contest as America raced off with a 7-4 Bronze medal. The scores were once again led by Wendling Ella and Paral Benji with respective draws of 17.1cm and 71.3cm. Sweden was led by Meyerson Jonatan who found no support at the other end of Roxin Maja.

The curling final marked the last medal event of the Winter Youth Olympic Games Gangwon 2024 and the closing ceremony has also been wrapped up. U. S athletes racked up several medals throughout the competition, and now, the spotlight shifts to the Olympic trials for Paris 2024.
