The Kununurra Rodeo in Western Australia had been eagerly anticipated by both participants and spectators, and the scene had been set. According to Yahoo News Australia, an unexpected turn of events left people fighting for life. As the lively line-dancing festivities took place in the center of the arena, a bull that had managed to escape its pen allegedly charged into the crowd, causing chaos and injuring many people, including young Aubrey.

Both Aubrey and her mother, Natalie Ripps, are shaken and traumatized as a result of the incident’s aftermath. According to Yahoo! News, her mother described the situation as “pretty terrifying”. In the aftermath, Aubrey was found lying on the ground. She was reportedly knocked to the ground and stomped on by a number of people. Aubrey, now at the hospital, suffered from many wounds, including swelling, a black eye, bruising, and two swollen ankles.  This incident sparked outrage among the animal welfare community.

However, Gayle D’Arcy from Animal Liberation Queensland, believes the reports of the bull charging into the crowd are misleading. “It seemed to me that he was simply trying to make his way to the exit as quickly as possible,” said D’Arcy. She also emphasizes how the audience’s experience at the rodeo often comes at the expense of the animals.

Addressing the Dark Side of Bull Riding

D’Arcy asserts that rodeos often involve deliberate manipulation of animal behaviors for the sake of entertainment. She emphasizes how important it is for the events to take place that animals have a natural fear and stress response. The crowd frequently dismisses the bulls’ signs of distress, such as excessive salivation, charging, and quick circling, as mere entertainment, demonstrating their lack of compassion or understanding for these magnificent animals.

Lance Bedford Jr., a rodeo rider, clarifies the potential causes of the traumatic event. He hypothesizes that the bull’s attempt to escape may have been precipitated by the length of time it spent in the chute alone and anxious. Because it is a herd animal, the confinement and overwhelming surroundings probably caused the animal great stress, which led to its desperate attempt to escape.
