Logan Edra in the Olympics—Is breakdancing finally getting the recognition it deserves?

Logan Edra, better known as LOGISTX, will be representing Team USA in the break dance competition of the Paris Olympics. The 21-year-old has already won numerous titles, is currently one of the most celebrated athletes in her field, and is the youngest member of the US Olympic break team. Her current rank in Breaking B-girls is No. 3, while she is ranked 7th in Breaking 1 vs. 1 B-girls.

In 2017, she won the Hip Hop World Championships Varsity Division with her crew, the Lab. Four years later, she would become the Red Bull One World Champion in Poland. Born to Filipino immigrants, Edra was an introvert who couldn’t easily speak to people. Dance was a way of expressing herself without words, which is why she fell in love with it so much. But her family’s financial issues would threaten this, as her training was becoming too expensive. Here’s more information about her life and the obstacles she faced:

Logan Edra was born in Chula Vista, California, on May 8, 2003. Her grandparents were Filipinos who immigrated to the United States for a better standard of living. Logan’s father, Herren Edra, was the one who mainly raised her and motivated her to take up dancing. She started performing break dance when she was seven. Her father had to trick her into joining the classes. He saw her listening to hip-hop icons like Lauryn Hill at a very young age and realized she had potential.

While she had a knack for traditional dancing, the classes were too expensive for those forms. After taking a few classes, she found herself developing an immense admiration for break dancing, and her teacher became her inspiration. Logan was always very athletic, as she participated in soccer and tennis as a child. She also trained as a gymnast for a few years, helping to develop strength as a dancer. Logan’s mother was mostly absent throughout her life since she was a child. However, as the pandemic took over, she wanted a new start in her life. Thus, she moved in with her mother in Florida, where she runs a dance studio now. But she maintains that her father was the one whose motivation led her to dance. Her name, LOGISTX, was also given to her by her father to make it more apt for hip-hop.

Logan Edra’s childhood was spent mostly on hip-hop jams with other fellow dancers who would show off their moves to each other. It would distract her from the events taking place in her home, like her mother leaving at the age of 10. At first, it was very hard to participate in these jams, as they were filled with high intensity and pressure. But it became her only escape from the problems in her own house. At the age of 16, she decided to move to Miami with her mother.
