Is Raygun's quirky dance style a breath of fresh air or just a viral gimmick?

Rachael ‘Raygun’ Gunn had one of the most unique outings in Paris. While she instantly became viral for her breakdancing, it was not much of her skills that impressed the fans. It was her lack of skills that made her meme material all over the internet. During her Olympics performance, Raygun pulled out some quirky slides along with kangaroo hops. Such moves made the fans feel hilarious, and they soon began to question the Australian dancer’s credibility.

In a viral petition doing the rounds on Change.org, netizens falsely claimed that she “set up her own governing body” and manipulated the whole qualifying process! Now surely, this was not true. But the backlashes did not seem to affect the Australian dancer much. Instead, she challenged the online trolls to prove themselves as a better dancer than her.

Raygun also had impressive prize money in place for the winner. And now, she has once again created ripples. This time, making a surprise appearance at Tones and I’s concert. In a recent Instagram upload from the popular Australian pop singer, Raygun was spotted taking centerstage, which was a huge surprise. The Olympian soon started to get grooving and even performed her much-trolled kangaroo hop!

Lending a hand of support towards the trolled break dancer, Tones and I wrote, “Raygun the most beautiful kindest full of life human I have met. It was an honour to celebrate you last night. Thank you for sharing the stage with me and bringing smiles to so many faces. You always have a friend in me. Tones.” Well, this was surely a feel-good moment for Raygun.

Incidentally, the controversy does not seem to be ending with Raygun. Just after her Paris fiasco, Raygun announced what seemed like her retirement. But much to the surprise of her fans, the Australian breakdancer later announced, “It’s not me that’s retiring, guys. It’s Ray Hadley!” Surely, a lot seems to be going on with the viral breakout at the moment. Interestingly, with more rumors spreading about Raygun, she recently doubled down on her options to feature in a reality show.

After her viral Olympic performance, Raygun was heavily rumored to be featured on, ‘I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!’. However, the Australian breakdancer quickly turned down the possibility. Reacting to the news, Raygun stated, “No, I will not be going into the jungle. I just don’t think reality TV is a good fit for me.” She further doubled down on her Paris controversy and even accepted the fact that she had a face which can very easily be made into memes.

Explaining her decision to not enter the realm of reality shows, the Olympian said, “I have a very ‘memeable face, as we’ve seen. There’s been some amazing memes that have come out, and I just don’t think reality TV is the space for me.” Instead, she now wants to focus on realms that can bring joy to people and also “encourage people to be creative.” Thus, it is evident that Raygun has made quite the name for herself, albeit not in the way she would have ideally liked. Now, it remains to be seen what lies next for her in the future.
