Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy has repurchased the website he founded in 2003. His first order of business? Ensure the boxers’ gloves are laced, adrenaline is pumping, and the atmosphere is electric for the RNR 22. Rough and Rowdy was an amateur boxing contest that used to operate in West Virginia. Dave Portnoy saw potential in the event and Barstool Sports acquired Rough and Rowdy, back in 2017. This was Barstool Sports’ second corporate acquisition after previously acquiring another sports website called Old Row Sports.

Dave Portnoy urged people to tune in
After taking place for a number of years, the Rough and Rowdy returned to Wheeling, West Virginia, for its 22nd edition. The event saw 20 epic fights and first 5-round main events that promised a battle of epic proportions. There was also a 4’6” vs 4’8” title fight that proved size doesn’t matter when the punches start flying. But that wasn’t all. RNR 22 saw the return of an epic rivalry – Lights Out vs Make It Happen. Another eye-catching fight was the BLACK ITALIAN STALLION Super Heavyweight title fight that shook the ring like never before. With such an epic night planned out, Barstool founder Dave Portnoy appeared in one of Barstool Sports’ Instagram stories as he urged people to buy tickets for an event that was destined to stand out with its lineup.

The event was perfectly complemented by the Barstool Sports commentary team, which included the likes of Dave Portnoy, Big Cat, Robbie Fox, and more. RNR 22 also included fan-favorite fighters like The Abel Brothers, Trailer Park, and Hot Wheelz. Today, RNR has quite a huge following, especially in small cities, but it would not have been possible without the vision of Portnoy. The Barstool Sports founder combined the thrill of boxing and the might of his media empire and made an event that attracts a lot of eyeballs both online and offline. However, only recently has Dave Portnoy returned to the fold after he bought back his company from Penn Entertainment.

Barstool Sports gets their founder back
Recently, David Portnoy sent shockwaves through the media and entertainment landscape. The reason behind it is the money he paid to acquire his brainchild, which was a mere 100 pennies. Only a few months back, Penn Entertainment, which is a prominent player in the casino and online gambling sector, acquired complete control of Barstool Sports in a staggering deal worth $550 million. But now, in a 10-Q filing, Penn Entertainment has openly admitted to having handed over 100% of Barstool’s outstanding shares to Portnoy for a nominal cash consideration of $1.00, alongside specific non-compete and restrictive agreements.
