Team USA forgot its good luck charm when entering the beach volleyball games at the Paris Olympics this year. Neither male nor female athletes were able to score a medal for their country in the sport. Team Switzerland, however, got a lead over them and made sure to use it appropriately.
After knocking over the Americans in the competition back on August 6, Tanja Huberli and Nina Brunner have succeeded in bagging a medal for their country.

Sara Hughes and Kelly Cheng faced the Swiss team on August 6th for their quarterfinal match. It is safe to say that they lost the opportunity by losing to them. Huberli and Brunner still had a few steps to take before leading their team to victory. Unfortunately, the two lost on August 8 against Team Canada.
The defeat must have been haunting for the team, as they didn’t see it coming. However, they were still able to make use of the victory that they got by sending Hughes and Cheng home.
On August 9, Team Switzerland faced Team Australia for the bronze medal. The former two didn’t have much trouble defeating the island continent. Switzerland defeated Australia with a set score of 2-0, respectively, by scoring 21-17 and 21-15.
It could have been the United States in their place if they hadn’t lost to them in the quarterfinals. Although the defeat to Canada must have been difficult to deal with for Huberli and Brunner, the bronze medal is a good consolation.

Meanwhile, the men representing the United States at beach volleyball in the Paris Olympics weren’t having a great time either.
Team USA’s last hope at the Paris Olympics in beach volleyball was lost later on
After seeing Sara Hughes and Kelly Cheng lose to the Swiss players, all American eyes were set on the men. Miles Partain and Andrew Benesh came together as the youngest male American beach volleyball team at the Olympics. Given their lack of experience at the global quadrennial event, fans weren’t expected to keep a lot of hope from them. Contrastingly, it was inevitable to do so since they were the only Americans left to compete in the sport. Under the pressure of being America’s last hope, Team USA’s men lost to Team Qatar. They put on their best show, but it was evidently not enough.

Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan outplayed the duo from the far west. Despite their best efforts, Partain and Benesh only came as close as scoring 21-14 and 21-16. This is when the supporters of Team USA must have known that all hope of winning a medal in this particular game was lost. Similar to the fate of Team Switzerland in the women’s beach volleyball event, Qatar is also set to play for the bronze medal in the coming few hours. Whether they will win or not is yet to be seen. If they learn from Tanja Huberli and Nina Brunner’s comeback, perhaps we may see medals going under Qatar’s name at the Paris Olympics.
