Olympic gold medallist and world champion, Sydney McLaughlin, has been named the World Athlete of the Year. The 23-year-old American hurdler is one of the most promising athletes since the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, leaving behind big names like American legend, Allyson Felix and many others.

Soon after winning the award in Monaco, McLaughlin posted a picture with the trophy and her husband. Not just her fans but also the sports world jumped into the comments to congratulate the young athlete.
Sydney McLaughlin says she has accomplished all her goals for the year
Sydney McLaughlin shocked the entire world when she shattered the 400m hurdles world record [50.68] at the 2022 World Athletics Championships. However, McLaughlin’s win was not just about breaking the record. She also became the first woman to finish a race in under 51 seconds. Hence, after winning the World Athlete of the Year award, the young hurdler said,?”All of my goals were accomplished this year.”
All of my goals were accomplished this year," said @GoSydGo. "We were able to accomplish everything we set out to do. It couldn’t have been any better, and I was so grateful that I was able to produce that performance in front of a home crowd."

The athlete was also quick to post a lovely picture on her Instagram soon after the precious win. In the post, McLaughlin posed with the trophy and her footballer husband Andre Levrone Jr.?”Athlete of the Year ?? What a way to end the most eventful year of life thus far,”?the hurdler wrote in the caption of the post.

The best part about the post was the comments section, as it was filled with wishes and love from her fans and some big names from the sporting world.
Allyson Felix, Coco Gauff, and others celebrate McLaughlin’s glorious win.
A fellow USA track athlete was one of the first ones to wish McLaughlin. Felix wrote: “Congratulations! Well deserved???”
Budding tennis champion and people’s favorite Coco Gauff also wished the hurdler: “congrats ??????”
Some other known athletes in the comments included:
American long-distance sprinter, Athing Mu, who wished: “Congrats!!!??” to the young athlete
Fellow American hurdler Keni Harrison, who said: “Well deserved ???”
Emma Coburn: “Congratulations sydneyyyyyy ???”
Athletes from other sports, like famous footballer, Elijah Moore also commented: “Yesss sirrrr”
Former Olympian, Dr. Sharrieffa Barksdale Oly, said: “so so so so well deserved you have truly truly changed the women?s 400 m hurdles. ???????? You are a rockstar”
Team USA also hopped in to wish their athlete: ” So proud of you!”

It was indeed a special year for the young hurdler. Off-the-track, McLaughlin and Levrone Jr. tied the knot earlier this year, making it a memorable year. However, McLaughlin was not the only athlete who made the headlines for her big win.
Other notable awardees at the 2022 World Athletics Award
Besides McLaughlin, Swedish pole vaulter, Mondo Duplantis, was also named the Athlete of the Year?for his record-breaking performance at the Olympics and Worlds.

In 2022, Duplantis had also broken his own records three times, and is the world record holder of indoor and outdoor events.

The Young American sprinter, Erriyon Knighton, won the Rising Star award, thus making him the only athlete to receive the title twice.
