School of Greatness Podcast is a famous podcast show launched in 2013 by Lewis Howes. Many great celebrities including some of the most prominent athletes appear as a guest on the show. They give a glimpse of their mental health struggles in the past and how they dealt with it. The topics discussed on the show are fitness, money, spirituality, mental health, human rights, etc. On June 2023, the American track and field athlete, Allyson Felix also appeared on the show demonstrating her thoughts on the challenges that she faced and how she stood up again.

Recently, Mikaela Shiffrin was also seen appeared in the podcast where she opened up about her mental struggles. The alpine ski racer often discusses the cruciality of mental wellbeing. In 2020 she told The People about her mental health struggles. She also emphasized listening to music saying it helps driving control. This time on the podcast, Shiffrin talks about her World Cup match with Lena Duerr where she was defeated, and how it impacted her mental wellbeing.?

Mikaela Shiffrin embraced her challenges

On 29th January 2023, Mikaela Shiffrin competed with the German alpine skier Lena Duerr, who claimed her first alpine skiing World Cup by defeating Mikaela Shiffrin. Duerr missed to secure a medal in the 2022 Beijing Olympics but she made it up with Spindleruv Mlyn Slalom World Cup victory. This deeply affected Shiffrin when she was already having low self-spirits and was struggling with her mental well-being.

She told The school Of Greatness, ?That season is like the worst thing that happened to me.? She then demonstrated her experience and stated, ?This was the last race series before World Championships. This season I was on a low, just drained. I lost the race by 0.07 of a second Lena Duerr, a competitor.??

The Olympian also told about how people were expecting her performance to be, ?people were thinking this could have been 86, the record matching performance, it would have been fateful.? But she did not let her self-esteem drown in that, she reframed all the good things that happened in the match. After the positive reframing, her mood drastically shifted which made her realize her self-control. She embraced her challenges gracefully and turned them into conquering the world cup.??

The unforgettable 86th World Cup Of Shiffrin

Mikaela Shiffrin has always been known for her dedication and determination to alpine skiing. After struggling with anxiety and negative mental thoughts, she overpowered the challenges and won her 86th World Cup. On 10th March 2023, she won her giant slalom in Are Sweden, and set a record. After two more world cup wins, Mikaela Shiffrin has now set a record for the most world cup wins in alpine skiing.

Mental health is always an essential aspect in the field of sports, however many athletes struggle with it. These issues sometimes strike after a chronic health disease/situation or the match play also impacts the mental health of the athlete. However, many athletes have come forward to spread awareness for the same. Hopefully, this would be the change now.?
