It was Sunday night and all of the biggest celebrities around the world were under one roof, The Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California. While many movies won their fair share, Everything Everywhere All at Once swept most of the awards. One big winner from the film first came to attention for playing ‘Short Round’ as a child actor in a Steven Speilberg film. Today, he got a huge shoutout from America’s alpine skiing legend, Lindsey Vonn.

The Oscars, inevitably as they are, often get emotional for their recipients. The Best Actor in a Supporting Role this year, Ke Huy Quan, recalled his journey from being an immigrant to the US, living in a refugee camp, to being on Hollywood’s biggest stage accepting an award. It was truly a moment to cherish.

Lindsey Vonn, a former Olympic gold medallist, and multiple world cup winner, recently took to her Instagram to share her favorite moments from the Oscars 2023. She wrote, “This makes me happy” with a love emoji alongside a teary-eyed Ke Huy Quan. In a short clip taken from Quan’s speech, he said, “Mom, I just won an Oscar,” while barely being able to keep himself together. He continued, “I spent a year in a refugee camp, and somehow I ended up here on Hollywood’s biggest stage.” A loud eruption of crowd cheer followed.

Quan first came to attention as a child actor in Steven Speilberg’s Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom, where he played ‘Short Round’, Indy’s 11-year-old Chinese sidekick who helps him escape in the film. Quan followed it up with another adventure movie, The Goonies.

Although he has done a few films intermittently since, Quan has been largely out of Hollywood circles, up until Everything Everywhere All at Once came along. The movie also stars Michelle Yeoh and Jamie Lee Curtis in the movie. They too won an Oscar for ‘Best Actress in a Leading Role’ and ‘Best Actress in a Supporting Role’ respectively.

Vonn also shared an extra special message for Yeoh in her story following that of Quan’s. She wrote, “Couldn’t agree more” to an immensely powerful quote by Yeoh. Yeoh said, “(Moms) are really the superheroes, and without them, none of us would be here tonight”. Vonn’s reaction to Yeoh’s speech creates more impact when one considers that it hasn’t been a year since Vonn lost her mother. It was a big night for the movie itself, with as many as seven Oscar wins, including Best Film.

The film centers around Yeoh’s character Evelyn Juan Wang, a Chinese immigrant who runs a laundromat with her husband Waymond Wang, played by Quan. They get audited by the IRS, and strange things start to unravel from there.
