And amid these challenges faced by the people of Maui, many athletes have stepped up to help. Kai Lenny and Kelly Slater have been constantly posting on social media to raise awareness and funds for the locals. Following this alpine skiing legend, Mikaela Shiffrin has also shown concern regarding the Hawaiian wildfires.

Shiffrin has been actively posting stories and posts on Instagram, trying to help the locals as much as she can. Last week, the alpine skier posted a heartfelt post showcasing her despair about the situation. And recently, Mikaela Shiffrin posted another story to help the local businesses in Maui.

On August 19, Mikaela Shiffrin posted an Instagram story trying to help the business of Maui. The athlete posted a reel of a local business owner with the caption, “An important message from a small business owner in Maui.” The video posted by a local coffee shop addressed the crisis and the economic factors involved in sending the tourists away from Maui. According to the local man, “I hear so many people telling tourists, don’t come here, don’t stay here. I think it’s a complicated scenario because what do we do”? “We go from disaster to economic disaster, and there’s no perfect way to handle this situation.”

Further, while talking about the people of Lahaina who lost their jobs, the local man requested the tourists and famous people who come to visit the magical islands of Hawaii to “share this with people; keep this going”. The Maui resident ended his video by adding that all the local people are doing everything they can to help each other, but he requests all to do more amid these saddening situations. Shiffrin is trying her best to help the Hawaiians.

Apart from sharing the local man’s video with her 1.3 million followers, The athlete has also posted a heartfelt note regarding the situation. On August 13, Mikaela Shiffrin posted a few pictures from her childhood visit to Maui with a note asking people to spread awareness regarding the disaster. The athlete also asked her fans to donate to a few local disaster relief organizations to help the island control the aftermath. As the situation in Maui, especially in Lahaina, is only going to get worse with time. The historic island has confirmed up to 111 deaths amid the wildfire.

The death toll keeps on rising in Maui

The Maui disaster is expected to be one of the deadliest disasters faced by the United States in modern times. With 111 deaths confirmed, the island expects the death toll to only rise. According to the authorities, who have searched up to 58% of the affected area, around 1,000 deaths have not been confirmed yet. As per Lynn Goldman, an epidemiologist, “The death toll number is always provisional. I assume people won’t stop trying to find remains, and the work will take a very, very long time.”
