Mikaela Shiffrin reigns as the queen of the snowy slopes. Clinching victory after victory and breaking records at the tender age of 14, she began her ascent to the pinnacle of Alpine Skiing.

Most recently, at the Audi FIS Alpine Ski World Cup 2023/24, she made history once more by clinching her record-breaking 89th World Cup win. This made her the most decorated athlete in the sport. Shedding the spotlight on the ruler of the slope, here are Shiffrin’s greatest skiing moments.

The youngest woman in U.S. history to win a World Championship

In 2013, Shiffrin made history at the World Championships in Schladming, Austria. At the age of 17 years, Shiffrin fearlessly confronted the world’s best skiers, securing the U.S. Ski Team’s fourth gold and fifth medal overall. This triumph crowned her as the youngest slalom world champion in 39 years, a title held previously by American Diann Roffe-Steinrotter, who, in 1985, clinched the giant slalom crown. Shiffrin, who could not fathom the reality of the massive achievement, said, “I keep saying it; I keep thinking it. It doesn’t make sense. It’s just me.”

After an initial third-place standing in the opening run, with an incredible comeback, she blazed through in the second run, leaving Tanja Poutiainen of Finland and Frida Hansdotter of Sweden in her trail. She finished with a combined score of 39.85 with Michaela Kirchgasser of Austria, who came in second, 0.22 behind her. A year later, Shiffrin once again made history at the 2014 Sochi Winter Games, becoming the youngest women’s slalom champion in Olympic history at 18 years and 351 days.

The Winningest Alpine Skier of All Time – 88 World Cup wins

According to US Ski and Snowboard, in a breath-taking display of skill and determination at the giant slalom in Soldeu on March 19, 2023, Miki, became the winningest Alpine skier of all time.

With a razor-thin margin of 0.06s, she secured her 88th World Cup win, outpacing Norway’s Thea Louise Stjernesund, with Canada’s Valerie Grenier claiming a commendable third place.  Notably, this remarkable achievement unfolded just weeks after Shiffrin had surpassed the legendary Ingemar Stenmark’s record of 86 wins, clinching her 87th victory.

This also made her the youngest racer to reach 80 World Cup victories. Fast forward to November 12, 2023, at the Audi FIS Alpine Ski World Cup 2023/24 in Levi, Finland, where Shiffrin continued her unprecedented dominance. On her 100-win journey, she once again defied expectations, seizing her 89th World Cup triumph.

In 2019, Mikaela marked her name again as a skiing legend with a sensational streak of victories, securing wins in all seven disciplines. The remarkable run began with her triumph in the super-G at Lake Louise, making her the first athlete in FIS Ski World Cup history to conquer all six disciplines. The historic year continued as Shiffrin dominated the slalom, winning her seventh consecutive women’s slalom race, tying her personal best.

Her flawless performance left rivals in awe, and she continued to showcase her versatility by clinching victories in the overall, giant slalom (a career-first), and super-G (another career-first) categories. In March 2023, Miki Shiffrin, the queen of the slopes, made modern-day history by surpassing Ingemar Stenmark’s record of 86 wins, clinching an impressive 87th victory. Notably, she became the youngest racer ever to reach 80 World Cup victories, securing her place at the top of the all-time World Cup victories list among men and women with a total of 88 wins by March 2023.

Continuing her pursuit of greatness, Shiffrin, in November 2023, added another triumph to her illustrious career by winning her 89th World Cup title at the Audi FIS Alpine Ski World Cup 2023/24, marking a significant step toward her remarkable 100-win milestone.

The Comeback of Mikaela Shiffrin after father’s sudden passing

The year 2020 proved to be an incredibly challenging period for Shiffrin. While training miles away from her father and brother in Italy, she received a distressing call from her brother Taylor, urgently requesting her mother Eileen. The reason was grim—her father, Jeff Shiffrin, had suffered a severe head injury due to an accident. In the face of this tragedy, Mikaela and her mother rushed home, spending the last day with her father before his passing on February 2, 2020.

Devastated by the loss of her anchor and cheerleader, Shiffrin contemplated quitting skiing. In March 2023, she triumphed in her 87th World Cup race, surpassing Ingemar Stenmark (86) as the alpine skier with the most World Cup wins in history.
