Mikaela Shiffrin is a legendary skier. During her illustrious career, she has broken several records and garnered several accolades. These include her 88 World Cup wins, 2 Olympic gold medals, 138 world cup podiums, and 15 Globes among a host of other awards. More recently, she won the Best Female Athlete 2023 at the ESPYs. With this feat, she became only the second skier in history to win the Best Female Athlete ESPY award after Lindsey Vonn won it in 2010 and 2011. Now, after an impressive skiing season, Shiffrin has been nominated for another prestigious award.

The Women’s Sports Foundation has proudly announced Mikaela Shiffrin as a finalist for the highly coveted 2023 Individual Sportswoman of the Year award. Amongst her fellow contenders are athletes such as swimming sensation Katie Ledecky, tennis prodigy Iga Świątek, and figure skater Kaori Sakamoto. As her fans eagerly await the voting results, Shiffrin shared an update for her fans on her social media.

As the women’s sports world waits for the final results to be announced, the skiing star took to her Instagram story. Shiffrin can be seen lying on the grass with sunglasses while colorful flowers are beside her. She captioned her story“Working on something fun with @outsidemagazine today,” as she tagged a magazine. Just like the upcoming award announcement, her social media update also does not reveal much to her fans. As for The Women’s Sports Foundation, the organization aims to highlight women athletes’ exceptional achievements spanning from July 1, 2022, to June 30, 2023.

The selection process saw the emergence of 10 finalists in individual sports and an additional 10 in team sports, all of whom have left a mark in their respective disciplines. Athletes are voted in a blended manner that includes the public’s voice and the judgment of the WSF Awards Committee. Other nominees include track and field star Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, surfing sensation Carissa Moore, and boxing champion Claressa Shields among others. The Women’s Sports Foundation was the brainchild of tennis maestro Billie Jean King. Back in 1974, King took a bold step and paved the for women’s sports and female athletes’ recognition.

The Legacy of the Women’s Sports Foundation

Billie Jean King envisioned empowering women through sports. Decades later, her foundation provides crucial financial support to women athletes and also aims to champion the education and advocacy for women in the realm of sports. Some of history’s iconic female athletes have graced the Sportswoman of the Year award, which includes the powerful Williams sisters, Venus and Serena. Soccer star Abby Wambach, gymnastics sensation Simone Biles, golf master Yani Tseng and basketballer Candace Parker have also won the iconic award for their contributions to their respective sports.
