Skiing fans can finally block their calendars as the onset of winter shall not only paint the landscape white and gray, but also flag off the skiing season. The 59th edition of the FIS Skiing World Cup, slated for 2024-25 commences October 26. It will kick off with the Giant Slalom in Sölden until March ends, and the events culminate on a high note in Sun Valley.
If only watching athletes ride down the icy slopes or lift the crystal globe doesn’t thrill you, American star Mikaela Shiffrin’s return to alpine skiing after her devastating injury last season surely will. This time around, there’s a lot for her to bank on. Her 100th win in a World Cup race and a generous bounty. Before we watch her surrender to speed, any idea how much money is up for grabs this time?

Interestingly, even as the FIS Skiing World Cup circuit stops at multiple countries, from Austria to Italy, France, Germany, the United States, and so on, the prize money that players take away remains the same. Each race comes with an individual prize purse of 144’000.00 CHF, which comes up to $169,344 approximately. Whereas, the total purse for the entire World Cup till 27th March is a whopping 14’000’900.00 CHF (close to $16.5 million).

Last year’s World Cup prize money and how much Shiffrin earned
In the 2023-24 season, the prize money for the USA stops of the Audi FIS Alpine World Cups would be increased. This was because of the US Alpine Ski Team title partner Stifel and its collaboration with the event; as much as a 30 percent increment was made compared to the previous season! Courtesy of which, this became the highest recorded prize in the history of USA Skiing and Snowboarding. Alone for the USA stops, the first-place winner was awarded 58,000 CHF ($64,300), the runner-up got 27,000 CHF ($30,000), and the bronze winner won 15,000 CHF ($16,600).

As a result, back in 2023, when Mikaela Shiffrin came second in the 2024 Women’s FIG Skiing World Cup, she took home a total prize of 557,000.00 CHF for her entire season. With 47,000.00 CHF for each of her wins, she romped in a hefty prize and finished her race on the 97th win mark before she got injured. On the other hand, the winner of the season, Lara Gut-Behrami, won a 574,200.00 CHF prize throughout the season. The third and fourth comers took home 484,000.00 CHF and 263,200.00 CHF, respectively.

Speaking of the Men’s FIS Skiing World Cup 2024, the top finisher, Marco Odermatt, won the highest prize winner across the men’s and women’s categories. Not just the trophy, he won 810,000.00 CHF in total, while the second and third-spot winners bagged 365,500.00 CHF and 317,050 CHF, respectively. Notably, a season before that, in 2023, the FIS Skiing World Cup was won by Shiffrin, and she took a hefty sum of 964,200 CHF!
