Skiing enthusiasts worldwide are enthralled with the 2023/2024 FIS Alpine Ski World Cup competition, known as the race for the crystal globes. This season began on October 28, and concludes March 24, 2024, sees the best skiers in the world compete in ninety events spread over four difficult disciplines: downhill, super-g, slalom, and giant slalom with total 11 slaloms events.
In the middle of the fierce competition, attention is drawn to the fierce rivalry between two legendary skiers, Mikaela Shiffrin and Petra Vlhova. With both skiers vying for a first place on the podium in the season’s slalom events, an epic battle has ensued, laying the groundwork for an incredible showdown.
All eyes on Mikaela Shiffrin this season

The tension peaked on Thursday when Vlhova fell 0.17 seconds behind the American after the first run, but recovered her power position by setting the fastest time on the second run, which gave her the lead. Shiffrin, who started last, encountered difficulties at every split and lagged Vlhova by 0.24 seconds. Notably, most first-place finishes this season now belong to Vlhova and Shiffrin, with the two coming from the race in Killington, Vermont, in November. When Lena Duerr became the final skier to win a World Cup slalom last January—aside from Shiffrin and Vlhova—the competition reached its competitive zenith. Now, Shiffrin leading the standings with 700 points and Vlhova behind with 491, both skiers have now claimed two slalom victories this season.
If podium finishes of this season was a book, giant slalom would definitely be the repetitive chapter.
The giant slalom Déjà vu
The initial women’s Giant Slalom at the Tremblant resort ski area on December 3rd set the stage for the main competition between the two skiers. Riding high on her success from earlier competitions, Shiffrin encountered the formidable Vlhova.

Mikaela finishing in 1:06.46s, however, came in just 0.05 seconds short of the record, giving Vlhova the victory for the second time.

With her sights set on adding to her remarkable career total of 21 giant slalom wins and 92nd World Cup race victories, Shiffrin knows she has to overcome Vlhova’s accuracy and speed on the slopes.
