Firmly engraving her name in history with 82 World Cup victories in alpine skiing, Lindsey Vonn has had a phenomenal journey. After retiring from this sport in 2019, Vonn continued to inspire, collaborating with Gucci to transform sports fashion for women. Recently, in a 2023 interview with SI Swimsuit magazine, Vonn related how Serena Williams, Simone Biles, and Mikaela Shiffrin inspired her. She also made an intriguing comment about how she hoped that she had contributed enough to the sport.

Her statement is important as like Vonn, Biles, Shiffrin, and Williams have also contributed immensely to sports. While Biles has won 7 Olympic medals in gymnastics, Mikaela Shiffrin has achieved 87 World Cup victories in alpine skiing and Serena Williams has won 4 gold medals in the Olympics. Describing the huge impact of these three legends, Vonn held nothing back about the female sportswomen she admired during her childhood.

In this interview with SI Swimsuit magazine, Vonn stated, “I love watching current female athletes like Serena, Simone Biles and Mikaela Shiffrin.” Continuing, she added, “They’re influencing the new generation in so many ways and I hope I have contributed to that as well.” Earlier, she also expressed that she looked up to the American tennis champion Billie Jean King. A reason for this was that King was the first female to contest against a male in tennis.

 

Later, Vonn recalled the impact of the alpine skiing champion Picabo Street on her life. “Then when I was 9 years old, I met Picabo Street and it was like this superhero had come to life.” Continuing, Vonn narrated how meeting Street gave fuel to her dream of competing in the Olympics. This was not the only time Vonn spoke about Picabo Street. In 2022, Vonn narrated how she met the skiing icon for the first time.

The alpine skier made these revelations to Entertainment Weekly in an interview and recounted that Street was her idol growing up. Further, she elaborated that she met Street, but how this brush with Street was only for 90 seconds.

Continuing, she said, “That 90 seconds changed my life.”?After this unforgettable encounter with Street, Vonn went home and told her father that she wanted to compete in the Olympics. Not only this, but she also made a plan of 10 years to accomplish this massive dream and made it a reality. This shows how meeting Street, who won the gold medal at the 1998 Olympics was a turning point in Vonn’s life.
