Lindsey Vonn is almost synonymous with the sport of Alpine Skiing. With 82 World cup wins and three Olympic medals, Vonn set examples to inspire female athletes out there. In fact, she is a powerful woman who let the world know that women not only can compete with men but also can defeat them. Recently, the Olympian gave tribute to those who inspired her at any point in her career.

Vonn took to her Instagram to share her gratitude towards them. Her list ranges from her mother to the youngest Nobel laureate, Malala Yusufzai, who eventually contributed to Vonn’s well-being. Remembering strong and independent women on International Women’s Day, here’s what Vonn contemplated.

The Olympic gold medalist posted a few pictures on her Instagram with a long caption, mentioning the special women in her life. Vonn started writing with, “To celebrate International Women’s day, I’m looking back at some of the women who inspire(d) me…” The first picture is of America’s former no. 1 tennis player Billie Jean King. King was also an advocate of the battle between the sexes of her time and started the Women’s Sports Foundation. “She proved that women could not just compete with men but beat them. I drew inspiration from her in my goal to compete against men”, Vonn shared her view of the former athlete.

 

In the next slide, Vonn featured her mother, who had suffered a stroke while giving birth to Lindsey. Unfortunately, her mother died in 2022 after prolonged suffering from a rare nerve disease. To give tribute to her mother on this special day, the Olympian added an emotional note, “…She fought to make every day a great day, even when she was dying. I miss you every day Mom.” Afterward, she mentioned Sylvia Earle, a philanthropist who dedicated her life to saving the ocean.

Then comes the girls of the Lindsey Vonn Foundation, who work as the driving force to keep her on track. The alpine skier also gave tribute to her compatriot Picabo Street, who is also an Olympic gold medalist. She did not miss Whitney Wolfe Herd, the CEO of Bumble who always makes Vonn look forward to adding a new chapter in her life. Hilaree Nelson, the American ski mountaineer, was also there on the list. Lastly, Vonn couldn’t resist sharing Malala Yousufzai’s impact on her life.

Those who follow this Alpine skier would know how she is taking stimulation from this youngest Nobel laureate. They recently met in the NBA All-Star game. Both of them are seen frequently posting pictures together. In her post, Vonn wrote about Malala, “the youngest Nobel laureate, has made sacrifices I can’t even fathom to stand up for the education of girls and children around the world. Proving the impact one voice can make.”

Recently, the activist praised Vonn, saying everyone has their own ways to make a mark and inspire others. The Olympian concluded her post by giving gratitude to those who inspire next-generation of men and women to move forward.
