Edson Arantes do Nascimento, better known to sports fans as Pele, passed away on December 29, 2022. The entire sports world paid tribute to the Brazilian after he lost his long battle with cancer. Even those who never played sports, like the former President of the United States, Barack Obama, also paid tribute to the three-time world cup winner.

In her Instagram story, the Olympic gold medalist shared a rare image of Pele and Muhammad Ali. The picture immortalized the moment when the two icons of the sports world embraced one another in 1977. In the picture Vonn shared, Pele is wearing the jersey of the New York Cosmos. The world cup winner played for the New York team in the defunct National American Soccer League.

On October 1, 1977, O Rei (The King) played his last game of soccer. The Brazilian legend decided to call it quits after an illustrious career. The Greatest was present at the old Giants Stadium to watch the three-time world cup winner play for one last time. After the match, Muhammad Ali stepped on the field to congratulate The King of soccer.

When Muhammad Ali passed away in 2016, Pele wrote a heartfelt message for the boxing legend. Pele posted that picture and wrote. “Muhammad Ali was my friend, my idol, my hero,” wrote the three-time world cup winner in the caption. He also wrote about always keeping in touch with the boxing legend.
“We spent many moments together and always kept a good connection throughout the years.” Added The King. Pele said that the sports world had suffered a massive loss, and he felt “overwhelming” sadness.
