The 2024 regular season has been a successful one for the Penn State Wrestling team. So far into the duals, the Nittany Lions have remained undefeated, and only two meets away from keeping the streak for an entire season. With freshmen on the rise and veterans taking charge, the team added to its remarkable path with Thursday’s NCAA ranking announcement.
The Nittany Lions over the past week drove the Penn State Wrestling program for their 1000th win victory alongside coach Cael Sanderson’s 200th. In the process of it, and the one leading up, the roster rose to glistening heights dominating the second 2024 NCAA coaches ranking.
Penn State witnesses impressive numbers

On Thursday, the NCAA announced its 2nd mid-season coaches ranking. Among the excelling starters framing the list, Penn State had 10 of its wrestling stars taking the top 10 positions. However, what added more to the glory was 5 of the Nittany Lions ranking #1 in their weight categories. 141 by Beau Bartlett, Levi Haines for 157, the former national champion Carter Starocci for 174, Aaron Brooks at 179, and Greg Kerkvliet for 285 reigned atop the second coach’s ranking.
Furthermore, the Penn State wrestling program as a whole retained its firmness on the No. 1 ranking in college wrestling. In doing so, the Nittany Lions left behind Oklahoma State, Iowa, and Nebraska down the table. Currently owning a 10-win streak, the team has just 2 more duals left to tick for their 4th consecutive undefeated season. The pathway further will lead the Lions to possibly reclaim their Big Ten Champions title.
Nittany Lions look for continued dominance

The past week, Penn State welcomed two milestones as they defeated Iowa initially and Rutgers eventually. For the latter, the Nittany Lions put up a 35-3 win at home, thus, bringing up 9 out of 10 wins tally against Rutgers. Owning to the momentum, the roster next has Nebraska Huskers on the list to tackle on the 18th. Nebraska is currently 11-1 on the season and 7-1 in Big Ten duals. Meanwhile, Penn State goes, 10-0 and 7-0 in the same fields.
Furthermore, on a closer look at the two’s rivalry, the numbers read 11-8-1 in favor of Penn State. Their last dual this season on Feb 6th resulted in the victory of the Nittany Lions once again. The defeat marked the Lions’ 7-win streak against the Huskers with the last of Nebraska victory arriving in 2010 for 20-16. With the stats, week, and the season looking well for the Nittany Lions, the hope for a continued win streak does not seem far away.

Penn State will finally take on Edinboro to end the regular season and head towards a possible consecutive win at the Big Ten Championship. The showdown will be hosted at the University of Maryland on March 9th and 10th.
