The Wyoming swimming program and the sporting industry recently stood to incur the loss of three rising talents. In a car crash that occurred on the 23rd of February near the state border, three swimmers hailing from the University of Wyoming reportedly lost their lives. As the news sent shockwaves across the industry, numerous sporting talents, including Michael Andrew, condoled the loss.

Hours after Wyoming University confirmed the students’ identities, the community saw reactions from the likes of Leon Marchand and Allison Schmitt. The 24-year-old Olympic gold medalist and other icons chimed in to mourn the loss.

A couple hours after the incident, Wyoming Swimming and Diving took to Instagram to honor its three students. “Keep Their Families, Friends and Teammates in Your Hearts,” it captioned, sharing the images of Charlie Clark, Carson Muir, and Luke Slabber. Michael Andrew reshared the memoriam on his stories to send prayers to the students’ loved ones. “Praying for the families and friends affected,” he wrote.

On the other side of social media, Michael Andrew was joined by the French 400m world record holder Leon Marchand and 10-time Olympic medalist Allison Schmitt. The latter of the lot added three doves of peace while more comments were made under the post. “Sending love to all the families and the Wyoming swim community 🤍🤍🤍,” US Swimming wrote. The USC Swimming and Diving further commented, “Sending our love and condolences to the entire WYO community and their families.” The love and prayers knew no bounds as hundreds from the community gathered to mourn over the tragic loss.

The tragic loss of the swimming talents

According to reports, the crash occurred in Northern Colorado’s Larimer when the vehicle rolled down an embankment. While the cause of the accident remains unknown, the occurrence ended with the demise of three students and injuries for two more. “Words are insufficient to express our sadness,” Wyoming president Ed Seidel told SwimSwam. “My thoughts and prayers are with our swimming and diving student-athletes, coaches, families and friends,” athletic director Tom Burman added.

The two students with injuries are currently hospitalized with no life-threatening situations. The women in the group were competing at the 2024 Mountain West Championships. However, further proceedings on the events remain unknown while the University of Wyoming has ensured counseling services for students in need.
