Cal alum Abbey Weitzeil is no stranger to the Olympic games. The 27-year-old has conquered the 50-yard freestyle like none other to represent her nation twice on the sport’s biggest stage. Today, adorning 4 Olympic medals, Weitzeil’s eyes on the Paris 2024 might seem a smoother path. However, add an unforeseen break and wedding preparations to the list and the champion has more to tackle.
Abbey Weitzeil made her Olympics debut in 2016 Rio- a relay gold and silver and two more at the 2020 Tokyo. However, just as she was making well noticeable progress, Weitzeil was faced with a tougher path when she failed to make Team USA at world championship trials in 2022. What followed was a block and a long break sparking uncertainty. But with recent revelations, the Olympian has made known she isn’t going anywhere.

The NBC Bay Area recently posted coverage on Weitzeil prepping for the journey ahead at her alma mater. “You have a coaching staff that expects you to be excellent in any aspect of your life,” Weitzeil says. She is currently training under UC Berkeley and former Team USA coach Dave Durden who is helping her push through her break and into Paris 2024. A break that turned out to mean unexpectedly well for the swimming champion. “I think having that forced break was the best thing that could’ve happened,” she tells The Athletic.
However, while she found time to prioritize family and savor a break, getting back in the pool did not prove easy. “It was hard to get back in shape,” she says. But her love for the sport was enough to get the Olympian going. She won four relay medals at the 2023 World Championships. And now being under coach Durden’s guidance and training with people on the same path has Weitzeil ease into her life outside.
