Katie Ledecky does it again! Is she the greatest female swimmer of all time?

Katie Ledecky is now part of an elite club that has very few members. Winning the 800m free gold in the City of Love, Ledecky is now the most decorated female swimmer in the USA and has also stormed into the history books. Replicating the feat of the likes of Michael Phelps and Carl Lewis of winning gold in the same event in four consecutive Olympic Games, it’s evident that Katie is on top of her game. Justifiably, her family is also feeling the emotions of seeing her bask in glory on the grandest stage, as we at EssentiallySports got to know.

Ahead of the Olympics, all eyes of the country were on Ledecky at the US Olympic Trials in Indianapolis. There she qualified in four events for the 33rd Olympics but later pulled out of the 200m free event. Naturally, as she triumphs in her most anticipated event, it’s difficult for her dear ones to escape the exhilaration.

Shreya Verma, EssentiallySports’s Paris Olympics correspondent, caught up with Katie’s older brother Michael moments after her history-making moment. The former University of New Mexico swimmer was all glee when we talked with him (we were even pleasantly surprised to learn that the Ledecky family is aware of our work!) as he found it difficult to express his emotions via words. “I don’t know if I can say much right now,” admitted Michael without deliberation as he beamed with pride seeing his sibling etch her name among the greatest swimmers of all time, and that too on the grandest sporting tournament of them all!

Upon being asked how it felt seeing her win the 800m free race, he said, “We’re very happy for her, she worked really hard.” On the side of the frame, Katie’s mother Mary Gen could also be smiling, reflecting the happiness that’s reigning over the family right now. Shreya proceeded to ask Michael about what was the most noteworthy event for them and he answered joyfully, “We were just ready to support her, excited for her, and she was ready to go.

While her victory in the women’s 800m freestyle race was obviously a monumental moment (she touched the wall for the final time in 8:11.04 minutes), it wasn’t the only highlight for the prolific swimmer in the City of Love.

Have an interesting take?

Katie Ledecky’s journey at the Paris Olympics began with an uncharacteristic stumble. In the women’s 400m freestyle race, she was bested by her Australian arch-rival Ariarne Titmus and Canada’s rising star Summer McIntosh, forcing the American champion to settle for a bronze medal. Yet, in true Ledecky fashion, she rebounded with resilience and determination, becoming the first female swimmer to defend the 1,500m freestyle on the Olympic stage. This victory wasn’t just a testament to her enduring prowess but a landmark triumph for female swimmers everywhere.

Ledecky’s elation didn’t end there. She played a crucial role in helping her national teammates secure silver in the women’s 4x200m relay, further cementing her legacy as one of the sport’s greatest. With four medals to her name in the French capital, we at EssentiallySports can only imagine the pride and joy her family must be feeling.

As the world watches, the burning question remains: Will Katie Ledecky continue her winning streak and add more medals to her illustrious collection, or will she decide that Paris is the perfect place to bid farewell to competitive swimming? Her fans eagerly await her next move. What do you think she’ll do? Share your thoughts with us!
