The mention of Gran reminded Debbie Phelps of an event in Athens where Micheal out-touched Ian Crocker. Ian Crocker was placed fourth and told Michael Phelps that he must have a guardian angel looking over him.

This win was not the only miracle in Phelps’ career. Debbie recalled another incident when she was dismayed to see Michael throw away his cap and goggles after winning. She later discovered that it was not an act of immaturity; rather, he had been swimming blind. Michael’s goggles filled with water, but he still managed to swim from memory and stroke count, bringing home another gold.
