In a dream-come-true moment, 18-year-old Owen Beck from Peterborough, Ontario had his biggest night this Saturday. After getting a call to play in NHL, Beck and his family have been over the moon with this news. Playing for the Montreal Canadiens as a cerebral forward, Beck donned jersey No. 62 and enjoyed his big night in front of his entire family. But not before performing a long-held tradition in Ice Hockey.
Owen Beck made his big debut for the Canadiens in what turned out to be a disappointing outing for them. The Ottawa Senators thumped the visitors 0-5 in Saturday night’s game. However, it didn’t stop Beck from celebrating his big night and it all started with his team staying inside the tunnel, while he went out there to perform the tradition.

In a clip circulating on Facebook, Owen Beck is seen leaving his team behind in the lineup, to go and skate around the ice rink a few times. The post reads, “18-year-old Owen Beck gets his rookie lap in ahead of his NHL debut for the Canadiens de Montréal on Hockey Night in Canada”. A proud moment for the teenager and his whole family.
This is part of the age-old ‘Solo Rookie Warmup‘ tradition where a rookie or minor-leaguer is welcomed into their team after they go out solo to perform a few laps on the ice. It’s a great way of introducing the player to everyone before the game starts. The team even lets the new player lead them into the rink.

At the blaring of the horn, Beck was out and about on the ice. While doing his laps, he also shot the puck inside the goal a few times. A loud cheering from the spectators indicated their warm reception. Although the tradition has been a part of hockey history for a while, it still holds an entertaining and endearing value for the audiences.

Beck’s debut was also a huge moment for their family members, who were all present in the audience last night. A reporter held the mic to Beck’s dad and asked him about his feelings on first learning about the news. Beck’s father said, “We were supposed to have dinner tonight and he gave me a call yesterday afternoon and said, ‘Sorry Dad I am gonna have to bail on our plans for dinner. I’ve got to play my first NHL game’. From there I just kinda lost it and here we are now”.

Beck’s mom and his elder brother were also present and were equally proud. Beck is a cerebral forward. The position tends to win games for the team in myriad ways that often go unnoticed. Beck couldn’t win in his debut match against the Senators, but things are just beginning for him. A promising career awaits him, and he might be an asset to the Canadiens, just like Nicojai Ehlers of the Winnipeg Jets.
