The UCLA Bruins took on the Arizona Wildcats on Sunday for the persisting collegiate gymnastics season. Posting a season-high 198.075, the Bruins etched a memorable evening owning to impressive numbers. However, while the team effort undoubtedly took the lead for the results, one gymnast held the spotlight. A spotlight enough to receive a shoutout from former Bruins, Jordan Chiles.

Jordan Chiles has long been a staunch UCLA Bruins enthusiast. Being the university’s gymnast for years to claim multiple titles, the Olympian is popularly recognized for her association with the Bruins. Today, as she stands as a Pan Am champion, eyes on Paris 2024, her heart and cheers for the UCLA gymnastics team remain loud and clear.

Jordan Chiles’ ‘perfect’ verdict for alma mater star

On Sunday, against the Arizona Wildcats, graduate Nya Reed posted a 9.95 following a flawless Yurchenko 1.5 vault execution. Jordan Chiles, holding her perspective commented, “Beyond Proud!!! That deserves a 10 in my eyes.” As the official media partner for the NCAA, ESPN took to Instagram to share the shoutout and winning gymnastics moment online. “It might’ve been a 9.95, but Jordan Chiles is giving this Nya Reed vault a 10,” it captioned in approval of greats’ interaction.

Nya Reed’s 9.95 was the highest on vault for the evening against the Wildcats. The graduate transfer from Florida University is a six-time All-American and was a runner-up on vault at the SEC Championships 2022. Reed also holds multiple perfect 10s on the floor and is regarded as one of the best collegiate gymnasts. Following her experience, the gymnastics star contributed well and enough to the ULCA’s triumph last evening.

UCLA gymnastics record impressive numbers

The Bruins recorded their 5th meet of the season against Arizona on the 4th of February. After clinching a win against Washington the previous week, it was a continued momentum for the gymnastics stars. A season-high 198.075 on board and the team became the first Pac12 team this season to break the 198 mark. The Bruins further also scored season-highs on uneven bars at 49.425, balance beam at 49.525, and floor exercise at 49.750. Majorly contributing to the numbers for the evening was sophomore Selena Harris leading multiple events.

The 7-time All-American posted a career-high score of 39.775 to win the all-around. She further owned uneven bars for 9.95, the balance beam for 9.975, and tied with Nya Reed on the floor for 9.975. “Beyond proud of our Bruins, who recorded their first 198 score of the season,” the UCLA Gymnastics added post-meet. The Bruins will next go against Oregon State on Friday, Feb. 9 at 8 pm, hoping for a 3rd season win.
