Why was Brittney Griner arrested?

NBA star Brittney Griner was detained in Russia for possessing cannabis oil at the airport. Since February, the basketball player has faced a tumultuous time at the Russian Penal Colony. Her appeal against her nine-year jail term was denied a few weeks back, and the future looks bleak.

Since her appeal got denied, the only way to release her before her term is a prisoner swap between the two countries.
