While the opening and closing day happens, here enter Bell Gable Stable’s Nutella Fella. He is a colt with odds stacked at an astonishing 54-1. Previously under the tutelage of Richard Sillaman, this spirited Runhappy colt had an unconventional journey to this defining moment. His last-out debut at Delaware Park, a 5 1/2-furlong sprint on July 26, saw him break a length behind the field, an inauspicious start to his racing career. Yet, fate had grander plans for Nutella Fella says PAULICK REPORT. Anthony Farrior’s astute purchase at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale for a mere $12,000 set the stage for a remarkable turnaround.

Transferred to the capable hands of Gary Contessa, Fella did a rigorous training at Saratoga. His preparations included a five-eighths effort in training track, a seven-eighths effort in the main track, and a three-eighths sprint. Contessa credited the New York Racing Association’s (NYRA) head starter, Hector Soler, and his dedicated gate crew for their pivotal role in Nutella Fella’s transformation. The colt’s fractious behavior at the gate is a lingering concern from his previous races. Junior Alvarado, under the guidance of agent Mike Sellitto, was chosen to pilot the horse.

As the race unfolded, Fella found himself at the back of the pack, seemingly out of contention. Just Steel led the charge, with Sanford (G3) winner Yo Yo Candy and the Bob Baffert-trained Mission Beach in close pursuit. The opening quarter-mile was clocked at a brisk:22.19, and the half-mile in:44.89 on the fast main track. It was through the turn that Nutella Fella commenced his remarkable ascent. With every stride, he closed the gap between himself and the frontrunners. what about the climax?

Climax is ready to soar

The climax of the race saw Timberlake, the 2-1 mutuel favorite, seeking a path to victory. Timberlake, ridden by Florent Geroux, surged forward, splitting the front-running Mission Beach and the maiden Be You. Yet, it was Nutella Fella who executed a stunning seven-wide run.

Additionally, Junior Alvarado, the jockey, emphasized that Nutella Fella’s swift pace was a crucial factor in the victory. He recounted watching the colt’s previous race, acknowledging the gate issues he faced. While the original plan was to mount a comeback from behind, Alvarado wished for a better break, given the blistering pace set by the frontrunners.

Since Fela shone through the race, trainer Contessa expressed his hopes for Nutella Fella’s continued success, revealing plans to keep him in Saratoga for the next six weeks. The colt will be gearing up for an event that offers a coveted “Win and You’re In” berth to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) on November 3 at Santa Anita Park.
