The trade deadline for the NHL is near. 3rd March is D-day, and some interesting trades are coming forward. The Tampa Bay Lightning has recently acquired the Nashville Predators forward Tanner Jeannot. The trade took place in exchange for defenseman Cal Foote. Not only that, but the Predators got five draft picks in their pockets as well.
The trade came as a surprise to the NHL community. Especially since it was a landslide for the Predators, even though both the players are good in their own right. So it is only natural that people started to speculate why the Predators got such a high return. The reactions were a mixed bag of disappointment and surprise.

After the news was reported on Twitter by Frank Seravalli, speculations were made as to what the implications of the trade were. Some considered the trade to be a retirement gift for the General Manager of the Predators, David Poile. Someone commented, “Nice of Tampa to give Poile a retirement gift. Most people would have settled for a gold watch.” Many thought the trade was overvalued. Someone wrote, “Of all of these picks, it’s likely that MAYBE one turns into a NHL regular. GMs need to stop over-valuing draft picks after #15.”

According to some, the trade was downright hilarious, “That’s a hilarious return lmao. Maybe be the worst trade of the day” But people also countered by saying, “Why? They’ve done this before when they think it’s a player that can push them over the edge.” There were also people who thought this was a genius move, “And that is exactly why Tampa has 2 cups and a string of appearances. Those other gms should take note”

There were also some fans who criticized the move, “If I’m the lighting owners and they don’t win the cup this year I’m firing the GM, because he just mortgaged the future (or what was left after Hagel last year) on tanner jeannot. Dudes got 15pts in 56games” While someone simply explained the reason for the trade by saying, “They didn’t want anyone else in the division to get him” Whatever the reasoning might be behind the exchange, the one-sided return has astonished people all around.
Tanner Jeannot traded by the Predators for Cal Foote and 5 draft picks
The teams announced that the Predators will be getting 5 draft picks in addition to the defenceman Cal Foote. The Predators will have their hands on Lightning’s first-round pick in 2025 with the top 10 protected. Post that, their second-round selection in 2024, as well as third, fourth, and fifth-round picks in 2023. Many are considering this to be a major victory for David Poile.

There are also postulations regarding the fact that the Tampas paid highly for Jeannot. While the player comes with an affordable cap, however giving away 5 draft picks with a star player such as Foote seems an expensive move. While this return might cost the Lightning, seems like the Predators are all set to rock and roll.
