Capitals’ healthy scratches are at risk
General Manager Chris Patrick is working to strengthen the Washington Capitals’ roster, and the upcoming trade deadline presents a prime opportunity for a roster makeover. Discussing his approach, he stated, “I think it’s going to be a balance of, are there ways to improve our team versus risking over-tinkering with what’s been a pretty good group so far this year?”
Dylan McIlrath, who has played just 11 games this season, has now been sidelined for 25 straight games. His last appearance on December 23 against the Boston Bruins did not stand out. A former member of the AHL’s Hershey Bears, McIlrath remains positive despite being scratched.
“It’s just the situation; I’m at peace with it. It doesn’t make it easy, but I know I just have to focus on myself. I’ve been at it long enough to be a pro, and I know I have to be ready when my time comes. So I’m really taking advantage of full-team practices, making sure I keep the same pace as the other guys, and treating it as if it were a game,” he said.

Alex Alexeyev and Jakub Vrana are the other two healthy scratches for the Capitals this season. With three healthy players held in reserve, fans are concerned about their availability.
Fans express concern over Washington Capitals’ roster
With just 23 days left in the regular season, fans see McIlrath, Alexeyev, and Vrana as valuable assets for the Capitals.
“Easy money for solid players on reserve 💪🏼🔥,” one fan commented. With all three players sitting out for extended periods, speculation is growing ahead of the trade deadline. If they are traded, who will replace them? This question has left fans wondering about the Capitals’ strategy.
“Who are they going to take the place of???” another fan asked. Having remained in reserve for much of the season, the big question is: Who will recruit them if they are moved? One fan expressed frustration with McIlrath, stating, “Well, I mean, McIlrath is awful.” Despite the criticism, McIlrath has remained cooperative with head coach Spencer Carbery’s decision to keep him in reserve, working to keep up with the team’s pace.

Alexeyev and McIlrath, both defensemen, continue to be scratched, raising concerns about defensive depth as the regular season nears its conclusion. “With the way our D has been playing, they need to get a sweater once in a while,” a fan commented.
Another fan jokingly remarked on McIlrath’s transition from the AHL to the NHL, saying, “I’m sure it beats riding on a coach bus to game after game with the Bears and staying in a Hampton Inn.” Now with the Capitals, McIlrath is embracing the journey, despite having last played in November. With the trade deadline approaching, his future remains uncertain.
