Donning his birth year in his jersey #97 is Edmonton Oilers player Connor McDavid. Younger brother to Cameron and son of Brian and Kelly McDavid, Connor is not just a player but also a husband now, after tying the knot last year with interior designer Lauren Kyle after dating for eight years. When he started off his career in 2015 as part of the NHL draft, no one knew that the decision would come to be quite successful for the Oilers to become the No.1 team in the Pacific Division as of 2025. His entry to the league has seen benefits that have come into prominence since his existence.

Born and brought up in Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada, Connor McDavid comes from a family of Irish and European descent. His father, Brian McDavid, has Irish roots, while his mother, Kelly (née Hiskr), has European ancestry. But when it comes to his journey in sports the player started off his career at quite an early age. Making his start with a different sport, his career in hockey took to new heights with several achievements and accolades being achieved by McDavid. The first step taken by him, however, came significant at the age of six.

At the age of three, Connor McDavid’s first interest in sport took him towards skating but it was just for a year. After learning to skate, Connor shifted his interest towards hockey entering the field as a four-year-old child. But to everybody’s surprise, two-years later, the player showed off his dominance on field during a league in Aurora by coming much more productive in comparison to his seniors.

Having dominated in his rookie days, the player came off strong under his father’s coaching which led him towards consecutive wins claiming four titles in Ontario Minor Hockey Association with York Simcoe Express. With such a start, the hockey centre then went off much stronger as an Under-14-and Under-16 hockey player as part of the Toronto Marlboros team while competing in the Greater Toronto Hockey League. After giving of a total of 33 goals and 39 assists in the game, the stark success gave him the title of Player of the Year.

Making such exceptions at the young age while being granted with honor from the Ontario Hockey League, Connor McDavid established himself and got his draft from NHL at the tender age of 15. This, coincidentally, made him the third player in the league history to be given the selection. But what is the story behind his entry in NHL?

It’s a grand entry to the NHL

When talking about his draft, Connor McDavid entrance in NHL came into effect in 2015 with No. 28 Edmonton Oilers drafting him as the first overall pick. Connor was, however, not an Oilers fan. He grew up as a fan for the Toronto Maple Leafs and his favourite player selection was also quite different. It was Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Connor’s prominence as the team’s centre started off at the age of 19. Gaining quite the attention from being drafted a year before the normal criteria, it was a quick one – rather lucky for the Oilers star.

Entering his rookie season, Connor’s performance led him to provide with an impressive score of 48 points that included 16 goals, and 32 assists in total of 45 games played. The prominence claimed him the opportunity to become the Oilers’ youngest captain, a first in the NHL history. Coming off with quite a dynamic reflection, Connor’s offensive start in the league resulted in several accolades coming for him.

The season following that is 2016-17 season, where his performance while donning the captainship crown highlighted him more while securing a century by his total points that included 30 goals, and 70 assists. And it was since then, that Connor McDavid transformed Edmonton Oilers to that level where they competed for the Stanley Cup for consecutive seasons. Coming close to the final match last year, Oilers faced a devastating loss in game 7 of the Stanley Cup.

The 2017-18 season got him several feats, including two Art Ross Trophies, two Ted Lindsay Award wins, one Hart Memorial Trophy. Now, his prominence is renowned not just in NHL, but internationally too as a part of Team Canada. He won three gold medals that includes in the 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 World Championship, 2015 IIHF World Junior Championship and 2016 IIHF World Championship.

Having established himself as one of the most promising members of NHL and Edmonton Oilers too, the two-time All-Star Connor McDavid’ transformation from a six-year-old till today has significantly held an important impact in the world international hockey.
