The Canucks defeated the Capitals, despite some impressive rink performances that stole the show. Before this game, the Washington Capitals enjoyed an indomitable 12-game point streak. However, the victory run had to come to an end as the Vancouver Canucks played their game with unrelenting grit, closing the points table at a 2-1 score win. Quinn Hughes emerged as the star, demonstrating exceptional captaincy and the two goals to his name that led the Canucks ahead. The Canucks were the underdog but eventually gained an upper hand as the game dynamics changed with the puck’s direction. But that’s not what we are getting at. The battle at the rink had a ‘Did you see that!’ moment that we want to tell you all about.
The Washington Capitals could not clinch the lead, but their goaltender, Charlie Lindgren, seemed to defy gravity to save a goal. The Canucks’ Phillip Di Giuseppe spotted an opportunity for a suave goal but Lindgren caught on to Di Giuseppe’s intent. In what could only be described as an out-of-the-world feat, Lindgren pivoted swiftly and lurched forward in the air to block the puck, and admirably so, his glove caught the puck. The bleachers roared at this iconic game-play by Lindgren that kept the Canucks in line with the Capitals at 1 each. You will know why we’re so pumped about the save when you see it for yourself.

The timeless save video, since surfacing, has drawn incredulous reactions in the comments section. Some fans had hilarious metaphors like, ‘Straight up forgot your wallet kinda save‘. We agree! it bears similarities to rushing back into the house for a left-behind wallet. Yet another commenter wrote, ‘Disgusting save despite the L’. The context of the comment still displays awe while wallowing in despair at the Capital’s defeat. When we saw the save, even our thoughts screamed, ‘Holy S**t! What a save!’ as did others. The feeling was mutual as it indeed was the golden catch of ice hockey. Most fans anticipate this save to be the highlight of this season. After all, the move had a striking similarity to something only possible by super-heroes, ‘Wow, Batman’.
What makes it even more spectacular is that this has happened before. In 2016, Ryan Miller of the Canucks made a similar move to save a goal in their match against the Red Wings. It is as if history has repeated itself through action in the same sequence. Miller left the net unattended just like Lindgren when the Wings saw their opportunity. But he did the same thing Lindgren did, he caught the puck spectacularly in his glove and saved the goal for the Canucks. Needless to say, the Canucks lost that game against the Wings despite Miller’s feat being lauded.

It looks a lot like Deja Vu. It is spooky how every time such a save is made, the team that made the save, has lost. Quinn Hughes’ brilliant game strategy for the Canucks earned appreciation from the Capitals’ coach, Spencer Carbery. Despite their loss, the Washington Capitals saw Captain Alex Ovechkin inching closer to breaking Wayne Gretzky’s record of 894 total goals.
We hope he does break this record in the Capitals’ next game against the Calgary Flames on the 28th of January, 2025 at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Canada. Tell us your thoughts on the amazing save by Charlie Lindgren and how the Washington Capitals would fare in their future games this NHL season.
