Czech ice hockey player David Kampf signed a four-year contract on Wednesday with the Toronto Maple Leafs. The $9.6 million deal helped the team retain one of their most valuable players. On average, Kampf will be earning $2.4 million every year. The star player became a free agent on July 1 when his previous contract ended.

Kampf had a good season last year with a total score of 27 points, out of which 20 were assists. He played 82 games this season for the Toronto Maple Leafs. The decision to retain the Czech center was made by Brad Treliving, who joined as the new general manager of the club. He saw potential in Kampf and could not let him go.

Brad Treliving acknowledged David Kampf’s reliable defence for the Maple Leafs and he wanted that value to continue for another four years. The contract news was made public from the official NHL Instagram account with the caption, “KEEPING KAMPF.” Originally, it was speculated that Kampf would be able to increase his annual earning to $3.5 million per annum.

Brad Treliving also signed a two-year contract with Pontus Holmberg worth $1.6 million. Many believe that while Holmberg is a solid hockey player, his value in the Leafs’ lineup has reduced because of Kampf’s re-hiring. Fans wanted the team to give Holmberg more chances to play in the NHL, but this recent decision regarding Kampf will most probably prevent that.

Even though Kampf may lack in offensive output, his defensive skills are almost on a par with the best players in the sport. In the past, these skills have helped the Leafs get out of very tight spots. In a game where a defensive draw becomes necessary, the team can rely upon him.
