They’re calling him Benjamin Button! And rightly so. The Pittsburgh Penguins star, Sidney Crosby, is skating smooth and silky like it’s 2005. Hence, the reference to the character from The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, who aged in reverse. Talk about casually dropping hat tricks and making defenders look like traffic cones; the Penguins’ star never stops proving his prowess!
Well, time might tick, but it hasn’t caught both Crosby and Alex Ovechkin yet! As Ovechkin dropped his 894th goal like it was no big deal and tied The Great One, Wayne Gretzky, the very next night, it was Sidney Crosby firing back with a casual hat trick that snapped the Dallas Stars’ seven-game win streak! So obviously, after the game, a reporter just had to ask Crosby if there’s some “friendly competition” between the two.
“No,” he began. “Like everyone else, we knew it was a matter of time and obviously a pretty cool night. He had some looks there late to get it with the hat-trick, so, like I said, it’s a matter of time but really, really special,” Crosby continued. And as far as his age is concerned, the veteran made it clear that it’s not something that keeps him awake at night. “I don’t think about it a whole lot. I just try to prepare for the next one,” he clarified.

And it’s safe to say that the approach is working, considering how just over a week ago, Crosby went past gretzky to cement himself as the only player with 20 point-per game seasons. What’s more? Besides leading the Penguins with 86 points this season, he is also second on the list of the Penguins’ all-time high point scorers. The skater ahead of him? The legend, Mario Lemieux. No wonder Crosby doesn’t want to change his approach anytime soon. “It’s better not to think too far ahead but, you know, that’s served me pretty good to this point, so I’ll keep approaching it that way,” he concluded. As long as he is still enjoying the game and able to give it his heart and soul, he is going to continue skating. And honestly? We love that for him.

But then again, despite his age-defying antics, the day will eventually arrive when Crosby will take his final curtain call. And it looks like the legend has already made some moves to ensure an exciting post-retirement life for himself.

Sidney Crosby plans to keep time
While there’s no farewell news breaking in just yet, the Penguins’ star is clearly laying the bricks for his post-hockey empire. Well, what is it that he plans to build? A business with his former Penguins teammate Mark Streit! From the world of ice and goals to the luxury of Swiss watches, its Crosby picking up a brand as timeless as his game—Norqain! “I’ve been wearing Norqain watches and following the brand since its first appearance at the All-Star Game in San Jose in 2019,” Crosby said. Was it a new assist we just never saw coming?

The announcement was made on April 2, and founder and CEO, Ben Kuffer, shared why he thought the Penguins captain would be a good fit for the brand. “I could tell he really liked the brand and the whole ‘my life, my way’ actually meant something. I think the key moment for me, when I realized this is something special, is when Sid said that, post-career, he could imagine being on the board or being involved in Norqain. He wants to really be part of the business.” Yep. Looks like his commitment to the business is as strong as his commitment to the Pittsburgh Penguins, whom he wants to see get back to the playoffs soon.
And who knows? Maybe he could get his name engraved on the Stanley Cup one more time before he calls it a day and moves on to the watch business. What do you think? Let us know in the comments.
