“Sometimes I Have to Turn Away”: Wayne Gretzky’s Honest Admission About Son-In-Law Dustin Johnson’s Performances Once Reminded the Hockey Legend of His Playing Days

In an interview back in 2016 with Graham Bensinger, Wayne Gretzky talked about his son-in-law’s performance in golf. He also shared about the emotional investment he has put into Dustin Johnson. Dustin married Gretzky’s daughter Paulina this April. Back in the days when he was her fiancé, Gretzky focused a lot on Dustin’s golf career. It reminded him of something his parents used to think back then. You can say the legend got nostalgic.

A good father in law

Dustin Johnson, being a golfer, also had a roller-coaster career like most other sports players. Although watching his son-in-law’s steps toward success in his career made Wayne Gretzky emotional.

“Sometimes I have to turn away if [Dustin’s] got a putt or sometimes I get nervous if he’s got a shot,” Gretzky said and continued, That’s because you’re pulling for them so badly that you get this anxiety inside you that you want them to be so successful.”

The love and care for his son-in-law are way up in the heavens for Gretzky. He just wants him to be successful, which sometimes makes him suffer from anxiety. He even recalled how his parents used to get a stomachache just thinking of Gretzky winning tournaments. Gretzky just got the same feeling that his parents used to get.

Gretzky even noticed how Dustin’s play style changed over the years. According to him, he got a lot better than he was. He even recalled how Dustin was sad about not being able to make it into the Presidents Cup team in 2013, but he didn’t give up. Dustin became more competitive than he had ever been!
