The Washington Capitals took a sweeping decision at the penultimate stage of this year’s Stanley Cup. They traded Craig Smith from Boston Bruins for the next season, in exchange for their defenseman Dmitry Orlov and forward Garnet Hathaway. This settlement is huge for the fans, as both of them contributed a great deal of time to the Capitals. This year Bruins are looking pretty strong as they are on their 5th winning game after the All Stars week.
Nevertheless, the fans didn’t take it joyfully. As Orlov and Hathaway previously helped the Capitals to winning the Cup, the supporters feel devastated by the news. Let’s dig deeper.

The Washington Capitals obtained a first-round pick in 2023, a second-round pick in 2025, and a third-round pick in the 2024 NHL draft. Also, they will reserve half of Orlov’s salary. Confirming the deal, Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan shared, “We would like to thank Dmitry and Garnet for their contributions to our organization.”
In addition, he also stated, “This trade allows us to acquire draft capital, infuse youth and restock our system. While this season has proven challenging with injuries to our significant players, we are in a position to use some of our current assets to retool our club and build a competitive team moving forward.”
Thanking Dimitry for his incredible 14 years on the team, MacLellan wished him a great future in Bruins. He also added, “Garnet has been an important part of our team and a role model off the ice for his contributions to our community. We wish both players all the best with Boston.” This year was indeed tumultuous for the Capitals, and that justified the decision. However, fans are definitely not convinced about the change.
Fans felt disheartened
While both the teams are looking forward to appearing better in the next season, their supporters don’t feel the same. Upset by the news, fans expressed their heart out in the comment section.
“Sad to see them go. Thanks for the memories. Good luck in Boston, my 2nd team”
“This is always the worst part of the year. Good luck Orly and Hath—I can’t think of you as Bruins tho—blech. Here we go rebuild!”
“Sad to see them go. I think Hathaway brought good energy and defense and was good for morale. Wish them good luck.”
Many thought that the trade will bring no good and commented accordingly. Some wrote,
