Madison Square Garden was buzzing, but not from the New York Rangers’ 3-2 overtime loss to the Washington Capitals. It was buzzing from Matt Rempe taking center stage and standing his ground against one of the league’s most feared enforcers, Tom Wilson, and telling him he would not be pushed around. And that’s what we call standing your ground, people!
Rempe nailed Ovechkin with a big hit in midgame, and Wilson wasn’t happy. The Caps enforcer immediately confronted Rempe in the second period, screaming at him for hitting down Washington’s all-time great. And naturally, the referees had to step in to separate the two pros on the ice. If Wilson believed he was going to intimidate Rangers star Rempe, well, he was in for a surprise.
“He was yelling at me, ‘Don’t hit Ovie! Don’t do that to Ovie! Don’t hit Ovie!’” Rempe told reporters postgame. “I told him I’d hit anyone I want.”

What was Tom Wilson saying to #NYR Matt Rempe last night?

It wasn’t just the 22-year-old who made his thoughts on the confrontation known, even the Capitals right winger expounded on his side of the story on TNT postgame. The 30-year-old said, “He bumped into O a couple times, which i just told him, ‘Anybody else but him.’ I don’t like it when guys are bumping into O. He can handle himself, he’s an absolute machine.”
While what we saw may have surprised some fans, this isn’t exactly new. Wilson had challenged the forward for a fight during the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs last April after he had injured some teammates. However, Rempe declined that fight and as fate would have it, Wilson called him out in his exit interview.
But this time around, the 22-year-old didn’t back down and that is the kind of energy Rangers fans have been crying out to witness. Rempe has been throwing his body around since he arrived in the starting lineup, and he was not going to take instructions from Wilson. Yes, Wilson got the last laugh on the scoreboard with his OT game-winner, and Ovechkin inched a bit closer to Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goal total with a power-play score. But in the eyes of the fans, Rempe won the night.

Matt Rempe’s straightforward style has his fans going nuts
It wasn’t long before social media was flooded with Rangers fans reveling in the energy Rempe brought onto the ice. If anyone was in any doubt about how much the Garden adores their 6’8″ enforcer, that was soon erased.
“Pretty sure Ovi can handle himself….”
The prevailing sentiment among onlookers was that Ovechkin, a seasoned professional and well-respected figure in the sport, had no need for bodyguards during the event. Many found it amusing that Wilson, in his eagerness to protect Ovechkin, inadvertently contributed to the moment’s humor rather than alleviating any potential tension. However, not everyone shared this light-hearted perspective. A number of fans expressed their disappointment, calling for more assertive action and visibility from Rempe, suggesting that they expected him to take a stronger role in the unfolding situation.
“What a guy! He should have ended Wilson’s career last night.”
Now, we can’t say that fans were clamoring for utter chaos. But they essentially were. This is Rangers hockey—no one backs down, and you don’t belong here if you do. However, a few fans were more rational and realized that both Wilson and Rempe were merely doing their job.
“Both players are doing their job. I love Rempe not backing down.”

That makes perfect sense. As an alternate captain, Wilson is programmed to defend his captain, embodying loyalty and strength, but Rempe is fiercely determined and refuses to yield to anyone—and that tenacity is what makes him so remarkably charming. And that is something that Wilson even recognized after the game, saying, “I like Rempe’s game. He’s’s come in, he’s worked really hard, he’s made a lot of noise. He’s a big fella, we’re gonna bump into each other a few more times here down the road here.
Looking ahead, his vision for the future is bright. Although Rempe is still a bit rough around the edges and developing his skills, he possesses significant potential waiting to be unlocked. With dedication and hard work, he could transform into a formidable asset for the Rangers in the seasons to come.
“Rempe may be a flawed player, but I do find him very likable. If he can continue to improve his overall game, I think he can be a consistent force for the #NYR.”
