Remember when Sidney Crosby mentioned, Recall when Sidney Crosby said, “Everyone has their own [coaching] identity, but with him accountability is a big thing. You could tell right away no matter what position, what the detail is, it’s all important. There’s no big or small, every detail is important. He’s very detailed when it comes to being responsible, being accountable, little things like being on time. He really pays a lot of attention to that and that’s important, as far as discipline and that’s helped us.”
These comments were aimed right at his coach Mike Sullivan, who went on to lead the Pittsburgh Penguins to two Stanley Cup wins in 2016 and 2017. Weren’t those golden days something special? For sure! So, with Sullivan leaving the franchise after Kyle Dubas, the Penguins GM, made his decision, there are a lot of rumors floating around that Crosby might be on his way out too, following his old coach. You know, in hockey, things can really take a turn when you least expect it.
It’s true that even though the 37-year-old has spent his entire 20 NHL seasons with the Penguins, trades in the NHL can happen at any moment. A loyal player might find himself moving to another franchise due to a rebuild. So, on X, Elliotte Friedman shared a quote from the GM, stating, “PIT GM Kyle Dubas said he called Sidney Crosby yesterday to give him a heads-up on the coaching change: ‘Five-minute conversation…I have to do what’s best for organization.’ Asked if he’s concerned Crosby will want to leave due to this move, Dubas simply said no.”

Isn’t that interesting? For sure! Crosby is such an important player for the Penguins. Even though they might not be having the seasons they hoped for like in the past, they’ll still need that Canadian hockey star to lead them as captain. But how did Crosby’s season go this time?
Sidney Crosby gave his best in the darkest times
During the 2024-25 NHL season, Sidney Crosby kept showing off his amazing skills and leadership as the captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins. At 37, he played in 80 games, racking up 33 goals and 58 assists, which adds up to a total of 91 points. This performance was his 20th straight season, averaging at least a point per game, breaking Wayne Gretzky’s old record of 19 seasons.

Crosby pulled off his 14th career hat trick in a game against the Dallas Stars, which also tied the NHL record for the longest point streak by a player who’s 37 or older. The captain really made a mark this season, snagging the Penguins’ Most Valuable Player Award for the 13th time, which beats Mario Lemieux’s record! Plus, he also picked up the Players’ Player Award for the seventh time, showing just how much his teammates appreciate his leadership both on and off the ice.
What’s your perspective on:
Could Crosby follow Sullivan out the door, or is his loyalty to the Penguins unbreakable?
Have an interesting take?
