It’s about time! Indeed, the entire hockey community has been buzzing with anticipation, and now the moment has finally arrived. Certainly, I’m referring to the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs. The opening round of the playoffs featuring the Florida Panthers and the Tampa Bay Lightning goes beyond a standard postseason encounter. What’s the reason for that? It’s a critical moment for numerous seasoned athletes as their careers near the end of the line.
On the SDPN YouTube channel, during the Chris Johnston Show, the NHL insider spoke openly about how this series transcends mere competition for advancement; it represents a struggle for legacy. “But what I think of is that it’s just players that, even if they’re not at whatever percent, I mean, so many of these guys have been key members of teams that have gone on multiple, multiple long runs. I think of Brayden Point, Anthony Cirelli’s, even like Brandon Hagel’s newer on the Tampa side, but he just fits in. It feels like he was meant to be a Tampa Bay Lightning. I feel like he fits into our group,” Johnston remarked, referring to the Lightning aspect.
Individuals such as Brayden Point, Anthony Cirelli, and Brandon Hagel consistently showcase the unwavering essence of the team’s foundation. Even with the exit of seasoned captain Steven Stamkos, the Lightning’s leadership endures, bolstered by veterans such as Victor Hedman and Nikita Kucherov steering the team forward.

Shifting attention to the opposing team, the NHL insider remarked, “Obviously, the Florida side, we know pretty well that you’re going to have the Tkachuk and Bennett. You got the X Factor, more just because I have no idea if it’s going to be X good, X bad, X what, but you got Brad Marchand on the other side. I don’t know what version of him will show up in this series, but he’s Brady Tkachuk a decade on. He’s going to want to be at least distracting the other team if he isn’t beating them with his hands and scoring a goal or something along the way. You know, I think it’s, you’re right.”
Matthew Tkachuk and Sam Bennett stand out as pivotal players for the Panthers, embodying both intensity and leadership on the ice. The inclusion of Brad Marchand, a seasoned player recognized for his playoff skills, brings an extra dimension of experience and unpredictability. Marchand’s position has the potential to significantly impact his new franchise, as he is undoubtedly a fresh addition, but only time will reveal how he will measure up against the competition.

What’s your perspective on:
Will Brad Marchand's unpredictability be the Panthers' secret weapon or their Achilles' heel this playoff?
Have an interesting take?
Additionally, Johnston shared insights regarding these athletes, remarking, “And I think that there are so many players that are getting towards the end of their careers too. You know, a lot of the guys I mentioned, I’m not saying they’re retiring next week, but they know they only get so many chances, and all of them right now find themselves on a good team.”
While both teams feature emerging talents, they also boast experienced veterans. For these players, this could very well be their last opportunity to capture the Stanley Cup, or at the very least, to come within striking distance of it. For Marchand, this marks a significant milestone, as it will be his inaugural playoff experience with a team other than the Boston Bruins. Are you aware of the comments made by his teammate regarding him, even in light of their previous conflict?

Matthew Tkachuk’s unique way of welcoming Brad Marchand to the Florida Panthers
The announcement of Brad Marchand’s move to the Florida Panthers from the Boston Bruins sent shockwaves through the hockey community, leaving many fans stunned. However, the spotlight was primarily on Matthew Tkachuk. What is the reason for that? Do you recall the events that unfolded during the 4 Nations Face-Off? In a surprising turn of events, the Americans and Canadians engaged in a physical confrontation, featuring players such as Matthew in the thick of it.
Additionally, there were multiple confrontations on the ice, accompanied by the usual chirping, a domain where Marchand truly shines. Putting everything else aside, Tkachuk shared his thoughts on bestowing the ‘Rat King’ title upon his new teammate, saying, “That is not me coming up with at all, but I think it’s kind of funny….We have a bigger rat on my team in Marchand now. So he could take over that title…I think what made our team successful last year is we had about 15 rats on the team. So I think that it’s, it’s good and okay to have more than one.”

It’s clear that Matthew is aiming to reclaim the title with the Panthers, just as he accomplished in the 2023-24 season. Are you aware that, putting everything else aside, he even welcomed Marchand to the team?
“No, I texted him first when he first got traded out to let them know that we’re super excited to have them. And, you know, let’s go finish the job this year. So I think once, once something like that, the competitiveness is obviously in everybody, but, um, you know, once you become on the same team, it’s, it’s an instant connection and you have to,” Tkachuk stated. The Panthers are once again pursuing the title, and with players like Marchand and Tkachuk on the roster, their opponents will likely think twice before dropping the gloves.
