The NHL is buzzing with the new trade that is taking over the headlines. The Colorado Avalanche has lost its right winger and star player, Mikko Rantanen, who was recently acquired by the Carolina Hurricanes. The change has been quite upsetting after the 28-year-old had an almost 10-year stint with the Avalanche team. Will he fare well here?
It’s a change of route for Mikko Rantanen. The ice hockey star took charge under another team this time. It was on Friday that the Carolina Hurricanes got one of the ground-breaking trade deals of the year. Mikko Rantanen was acquired by the team under a three-team trade, including Colorado Avalanche, from whom the player got acquired in exchange for their forwards Jack Drury and Martin Necas, along with a second-rounnd pick in the 2025 NHL Draft and a fourth-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. The other team involved in the trade was the Chicago Blackhawks, that will get a third-round pick and retain 50 per cent of Rantanen’s $9.5 million cap hit.
A dominant player currently in the NHL, Rantanen is coming off as a No. 6 forward with a total of 64 points, including 25 goals scored in 49 games this season. Carrying a dynamic offensive ground in the field, the player has scored 1.25 points in every game played in the postseason, which makes him in the mark among NHL legends like Mark Messier and Mike Bossy.

Before coming under the Hurricanes, Rantanen got himself a deal with the Edmonton Oilers worth $14 million that was the same as given to their alternate captain Leon Draisaitl. The Colorado Avalanche, however, went short and they weren’t willing to go that rout, given they already had their center, Nathan MacKinnon, at $12.6 million. Additionally, Cale Maker is also eligible for a huge contract extension in July 2026.
But it was the Hurricanes that the player landed into. With a 365-point career score in 286 games, a fifth ranking in the NHL is rather significant but it has put out questions in the minds of the fans on where Mikko Rantanen currently stands.
What do fans have to say?
Contracts and deals are extremely necessary for the authenticity of an athlete. While coming off with disappointing negotiations on the deals made and Colorado failing to provide enough, Mikko Rantanen‘s trade with the Colorado Hurricanes has created quite the discussion among fans.
A fan giving a humorous comment states on how Rantanen decides to ditch the Carolina Hurricanes and join some other team. “It would be hilarious if he decides to sign with Avs in FA.” Giving up his ten-season career with the Colorado Avalanche and now getting acquired by the Hurricanes, it would be quite strange if the NHL star ends up with Portuguese team AVS Futebol for the Football Cup.
Another fan comments on the possibility of Rantanen joining another team coming into account besides AVS. “Hes gonna go play with his old pal JT Compher.” A good friend to Joseph Taylor Compher, who was also his teammate during his time in the Colorado Avalanche, fans think that the hockey player could also land with the Detroit Red Wings to join forces with his best friend.

Not just Portugal or Detroit, but fans have come with other team recommendations for Rantanen. “He’s going to sign with Utah or Seattle.” For him, according to the NHL community, the other probable team are Utah Hockey Club and Seattle Kraken.
For one fan, Rantanen with the Carolina Hurricanes seems like a good fit. “I’d say it’s a good possibility.” If given the correct contract as per the requirements and based on the accolades achieved, the former Avalanche player could end up signing with the Hurricanes, which comes as an added bonus for the team.
Taking into account the paycheck, a fan comments on the payment cap the Hurricanes can offer to Rantanen, “Isn’t dundon notoriously cheap?” NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes owner, Tom Dundon, a billionaire businessman, however, comes into account who is known for offering low contracts in the trade deals.

With the Carolina Hurricanes making the trade, questions coming over Rantanen’s interest to play for the team, with one fan commenting, “They’ll have the cap space, but only he knows if he wants to play there. I don’t see why not, but it’s possible he doesn’t want to.”
