What happens when one of the greatest hockey players of all time must make a difficult choice that may affect his legacy and his team? That’s what Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby, 37, is going through right now. He is battling to return to the rink in time for the 4 Nations Face-Off competition after suffering an upper-body injury during a recent game. In an interview with Sportsnet, NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman talked about the problem. The pressure is still there, though, so hold on.

On February 4, 2025, Crosby sustained an injury after being struck hard by Devils players Luke Hughes and Erik Haula during a 2-3 shootout loss to the New Jersey Devils. Crosby returned to continue the game, but it was clear that something was off because his left arm was stuck during the collision. As soon as the game finished, Crosby simply said, “I just got tangled up,” but later on, as he missed out on the Penguins’ next two games, it did raise concerns about his status for the 4 Nations tournament, and this is a crucial matter.

Elliotte Friedman, the 54-year-old Canadian sports reporter, in an interview with Sportsnet on February 7, 2025, said, “We’ve seen Pietrangelo out, who’s still playing. We’re awaiting a decision on Quinn Hughes. Right here, we’ve had a bunch of players from William Carlson to Jacob Markstrom to Miro Heiskanen already proclaimed out because they are missing games. To me, I think Crosby has earned the right and might be the only guy in the tournament who you could say has earned the right to play in this tournament even if he misses NHL games. I think if Sidney Crosby says he wants to play, even if he can’t play the Penguins’ last two games before the break, he should be allowed to play and nobody should be complaining about it. Nobody. It’s his call, and he’s earned the right to make it.”

Elliotte Friedman confirms Sidney Crosby’s status. The veteran center’s legacy with Team Canada speaks for itself; he has been one of the most reliable and significant players in international hockey. But despite the injury concerns, Friedman believes that Crosby should be given the autonomy to make the call on whether he plays in the 4 Nations tournament.

Have an interesting take?

Crosby’s commitment to his game is undeniable. He has continued to attend practice despite his injury, skating for the third straight day before missing the Penguins’ February 8, 2025, game against the Philadelphia Flyers. But this is not all; in fact, this was the first time since April 7, 2022, that Crosby has missed a game; that’s huge after his 229 regular-season game show-ups. Crosby leads the Penguins with 58 points in 55 games this season; his absence is notable. For now, it is unclear if he will be able to make a return in time to perform at his peak.

Penguins’ coach Mike Sullivan updated, “We’re going to take each day as it comes. He skated for a long time this morning. He felt significantly better today than he did yesterday, and that’s really encouraging.” Unfortunately, the Penguins are also dealing with other injuries, including forward Bryan Rust, who was placed on injured reserve with a lower-body injury. Even after the mounting injuries, Sullivan’s focus has been on Sidney Crosby’s recovery.

The 4 Nations Face-Off is a grand opportunity for Crosby and the amount of time for recuperation is decreasing daily. His arm injury has had a significant impact on his play, so even though he has skated and practiced, it is still uncertain if he will be fully recovered for Canada’s opening game. Given how urgent the situation is and how soon the tournament is approaching, Crosby’s position will continue to be one of the NHL’s most monitored storylines.

Sidney Crosby and his team have a unique chore ahead of them because of injuries. As the 4 Nations event draws near, he has to make decisions that might define his legacy as Team Canada’s captain.
