It was in December that the New York Rangers caused quite a stir in the NHL by signing Igor Shesterkin to an eight-year, $92 million deal. That is an astonishing $11.5 million per season, and that makes him the highest-paid goalie in the league. He was to become an unrestricted free agent in July 2025, but the Rangers could not afford to lose their top goaltender. He even topped Carey Price and Sergei Bobrovsky, whose contracts were considered the highest paid in the league for goaltenders.

Shesterkin’s new deal didn’t just turn heads—it set a whole new bar in the goaltending market. But hold on, Rangers fans, because the goaltending drama isn’t over yet! An NHL insider just spilled the tea on yet another jaw-dropping move between the pipes. This time it is a 21-year-old talent who has attracted much attention with a significant career move. Just when you thought the New York Rangers had settled their goaltending future, another twist entered the chat.

NHL insider Elliotte Friedman just dropped a bombshell on X, and New York Rangers’ fans better buckle up! On March 31, he spilled the tea, saying, “Hearing 21-year-old Callum Tung from Port Moody, BC — who played at NCAA UConn this season — is leaving after his freshman year…closing in on joining the New York Rangers.” “Tung started UConn’s two NCAA tournament games last weekend, the first in the school’s history,” he concluded.

Yep, you read that right! The young goalie sensation is making some major power moves, and the New York Rangers are right in the mix. After making history at UConn, Tung isn’t just testing the waters—he’s diving straight into the deep end with one of the NHL’s biggest teams. If this deal goes through, the New York Rangers’ goalie scene is about to get real interesting.

One can only imagine what the New York Rangers would be getting if they manage to sign Callum Tung! Prior to his time at UConn, Tung was showing off his skills for the Alberni Valley Bulldogs of the BCHL, and it’s clear that this guy has the reflexes, grit, and ice-cold composure of a future star. In 38 games, he posted a record of 22-14-1, boasted an average of 2.80 goals per game, and a save percentage of .91,7 all of which point towards a promising future.

And when the lights got even brighter in the playoffs? Tung dialed it up a notch, boasting an 11-6-1 record, slicing his GAA to 2.11, and posting an insane .940 save percentage. What’s more? In his freshman season, he helped UConn to the regional final against Penn State as he racked up an impressive .931 save percentage and 2.01 GAA over 14 games. All in all, the Rangers have their eyes set on a serious prospect. And now, with Tung in the conversation, they might be doubling down on another big-time steal.

What’s your perspective on:

Will Callum Tung's leap to the NHL shake up the Rangers' goaltending hierarchy?

The New York Rangers hit a jackpot!

The New York Rangers have pulled off yet another masterstroke, and this is one of the best! Just a few hours ago, the team’s president and GM Chris Drury made a move, signing 19-year-old sensation Gabe Perreault to a three-year, entry-level contract. And guess what? He is going directly to New York! This kid has skills–he played his sophomore year at Boston College and scored 48 points in 37 games. With 16 goals and 32 assists, he wasn’t just playing—he was putting on a show. Tied for fourth in assists across the NCAA and a nominee for the Hobey Baker Award? Yeah, the hype is real.

But wait—Perreault’s been stacking receipts long before this deal. In two years with Boston College he scored 108 points in 73 games, proving he’s got hands as smooth as silk and the vision to make magic happen on the ice. Before that? He played it up with USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program and scored an astonishing 185 points in 121 games, which placed him fourth in both categories of assists and points. And if that was not enough, in his last year of playing for the USNTDP, he set a record of scoring 132 points in a season.

And let’s not forget his golden touch—literally. Perreault snagged gold medals at the 2024 and 2025 World Junior Championships and the 2023 U-18 World Championship. The New York Rangers took him 23rd overall in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft, and now, they’ve officially brought him into the fold. Safe to say, the Blueshirts aren’t just winning on the ice—they’re stacking Ws off it too.
