As they say, age is just a number, and Jonathan Quick is here to defy that, to prove that he is still a legend and has no business hanging up his skates yet! The New York Rangers’ veteran netminder isn’t done just yet—he’s locked in for another year, keeping that Hall-of-Fame-worthy career rolling. The team confirmed the news on Wednesday, which included that the player signed a new one-year contract of $1.55 million. That means Quick, who hit 39 in January, now has a shot at playing until the big 4-0. And why not?

The man has been on fire, coming back to New York as the ideal backup to Igor Shesterkin—the same Shesterkin who secured a historic goalie contract just a few months ago. However, while some people are excited to see Quick remaining with the team, others are not too sure. The terms of the contract have sparked a lot of concern among the Rangers fans and some of them have questioned whether this is the best thing to have been done. After all, goalie decisions in the NHL are known to define the success or failure of a team in the season.

Hockey insider Frank Seravalli just dropped the details Rangers fans have been waiting for! Taking to X on March 12, the President of Hockey Content at Daily Faceoff spilled the tea on Jonathan Quick’s contract extension. And let’s just say, the veteran goalie is securing the bag while keeping things interesting with some juicy performance bonuses.

Seravalli shared, Jonathan Quick #NYR. 1-year extension: $1.55 million AAV. $1 million salary. $550,000 signing bonus. $300,000 potential performance bonuses. 20 starts w/ .915 sv% or above = $75k. 35 games played = $25k. 40 games played = $50k. 20 wins = $50k. 25 wins = $100k. Modified NTC.” Looks like Quick’s got every reason to bring the heat between the pipes next season—because every save, every win, and every extra game played could mean more dollars in the bank!

And, of course, the internet had thoughts. Fans were quick to react to Quick’s contract, and let’s just say, emotions were all over the ice. One user wasn’t feeling too optimistic, chiming in with, “Doubtful he hits those bonus unless Igor gets hurt.” Ouch. But hey, that’s hockey for you—anything can happen, and Quick has made a career out of proving people wrong.

Speaking of Igor Shesterkin, let’s not forget—just back in December, the New York Rangers’ superstar goalie secured the golden bag, becoming the NHL’s highest-paid goaltender after locking in an eight-year, $92 million extension; Kevin Weekes of NHL Network first reported that the contract was going to give Shesterkin an $11.5 million cap hit beginning next season. It also takes him past Carey Price, who has a $10.5 million hit, although he has not played in the season since 2021-2022. And the previous top earner? Florida Panthers’ 2024 Stanley Cup winner Sergei Bobrovsky, sitting at $10 million. So yeah, between Quick’s extension and Shesterkin’s record-breaking payday, the Rangers’ goalie situation is definitely making headlines. But this was just the beginning!

What’s your perspective on:

Can Jonathan Quick defy age and prove he's still got what it takes for the Rangers?

Have an interesting take?

New York Rangers’ fans are not so happy with the details!

And just like that, the contract tea spilled, and New York Rangers’ fans had thoughts. One fan went to the details and stated, “Don’t like the .915 part. What if goal scoring goes up because of a rule change/other. Should have been worded .15 above league average.” A fair point, especially when realizing that the save percentage in the 2022-23 season in the NHL was at .904. So, anything above 0.905? That’s ‘above average’ territory. However, add some changes to the game and those benchmarks change quicker than a soccer goalie’s breakaway.

Naturally, this tiny detail has fans spiraling—because when it comes to contracts, even the smallest of decimal is significant. But oh, the skepticism doesn’t stop there. Another fan threw in their two cents with a brutally honest take: “love you quickie but bro is NOT getting those bonuses😭😭😭😭😭.” Ouch. The New York Rangers’ legend has the love, but when it comes to cashing in those extra checks? Well, let’s just say the fanbase isn’t exactly betting the house on it.

And the drama keeps rolling! One New York Rangers’ fan could not resist a little humor and commented, “Even 40 yo Quick gets a NTC 😂.” And, well… yup, he sure does! Because why not? He has been through it all, expected to finish his career as a King, was traded, found a niche as a backup in Vegas and then ends up in New York, the team he cheered for as a kid. Now, after achieving these historic wins and shutouts, the Rangers have re-affirmed their faith in him by signing him for another year. It has been a bumpy journey for Quick, but at least he now gets to make some of the decisions.

But the NTC talk doesn’t stop there. Another fan threw in a spicy take: “1 more player in the NHL with a NTC. At what point will we have too many players with NTC?” And honestly, fair question. While Quick is still enjoying the no-trade clause privilege, some of the players are already on the move. Rangers veteran Reilly Smith? He is no longer interested in the Canada life and has waived the no-trade clause. So, while Quick stays put at New York Rangers, others are plotting their next steps—because in the NHL, the only constant is change.
