In 2014, Wayne Gretzky pulled a gentleman’s image at an interview. Although he has undoubtedly remained one of the undefeatable champions in sports history, he refused to stand next to another champion. Who was this champion and what were the similarities?
When Wayne Gretzky felt privileged to just play the sport
Although Wayne Gretzky’s great contributions to the sport are collectively agreed upon, the player thought otherwise. While he felt privileged to be a part of the NHL community, his humble self didn’t think that he was the greatest of all. In fact, he had two hockey players in his mind who deserved the top position, namely Gordie Howe and Bobby Orr. He gave room for fans to designate him a position after them, but not the top two.
However, the next compliment floored the veteran hockey player. Colloquially called ‘The Great One’, the interviewer compared Gretzky to Michael Jordan with respect to his sport. Throughout his career, the hockey star has accomplished a lot and is proud of it even. In fact, he stressed, “I know what I did. Nobody can take that away from me”.
While mentioning his general good fortune of being able to play in the NHL, Gretzky also gave props to fellow players. He appreciated their dedication to the sport and the way they understood and respected the game. Even with his rivals, he admired how they shared the same sentiment toward the game.

Something heartwarming about the interview was Gretzky’s reaction to new players. The veteran showed true sportsmanship when he expressed how he wanted new players to break his record. That would not only move the sport forward but will also set new benchmarks to achieve. This is why Gretzky is truly the great one.
