Yesterday’s match between the Detroit Red Wings and the Anaheim Ducks was pretty intense. But the NHL community probably wasn’t thinking about the Ducks beefing up their roster at the Red Wings’ expense on the very next day. Detroit has traded netminder Ville Husso after the Finnish star spent most of his season in the minors.
The official Detroit Red Wings X handle posted on the platform on February 24, sharing news of Ville’s departure to Anaheim. “The #RedWings have traded Ville Husso to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for future considerations,” the social media update revealed. For the most part, “future conditions” can be considered a code word for little to not many possibilities.
However, it’s not like Husso’s departure would break too many hearts. Husso played mostly in the minors, (13 games for the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins, posting an 8-4-0 record) after he didn’t make many waves as part of the Detroit Red Wings roster and had to surrender his position to Cam Talbot and Alex Lyon.

In fact, his departure could bode well for Detroit, especially considering the fact that they now have some salary cap wiggle room right ahead of the trade deadline.

Naturally, with a new spot opening up in the roster, fans couldn’t help but wonder who the Detroit Red Wings could be eyeing to rope in with the $3.6 million cap space that the squad now has. The Hurricanes’ Mikko Rantanen has been involved in several trade rumors in recent days, and one fan thinks one Finn for another should be the way to go. “Miko Rantanen? That would be such a badass move,” a fan commented with enthusiasm. Rantanen was acquired by Carolina from Colorado only about a month ago. However, reports about the right winger rejecting the Hurricanes’ extension proposal have prompted thoughts about him getting peddled by the team, and this fan thinks the Detroit Red Wings shouldn’t sit out on the opening.
Others had their own suggestions about whom to reach out to with the salary cap at hand. Seeing how the Ducks got something to be happy about despite how the match between Anaheim and Detroit played out yesterday, fans believe that the Detroit Red Wings should also try and come out of the deal with something to show for.

Detroit Red Wings has a long list of options to delve into
“May I interest you in a Georgiev or Vanecek?” one fan posited. The San Jose Sharks might not be making many waves this NHL season, they’re at the bottom of the Pacific Division, but their netminder Alexandar Georgiev has established himself as a dependable one over nine seasons in the league. Boasting a .905 save percentage, the Bulgarian could easily give anyone a run for their money’s worth. Georgiev’s teammate Vitek Vanecek is also a reputed goalie, who has already recorded 15 saves in 16 games playing for the Sharks in a year. Naturally, both these two NHL goalies look like lucrative options and one fan suggested the Detroit Red Wings could take a look.
Charlie Lindgren‘s three-year contract worth $3.3 million with the Capitals will also end in 2025. With a .907 save percentage, the 31-year-old could be the perfect substitute for Husso, claimed one fan, as they chimed in with the comment, “Lindgren holy red wing.” But another fan has something more audacious to suggest. “Parayko maybe?” wondered the fan, pondering the chances of the Red Wings getting their hands on the St. Blue star defenseman with 215 assists and 289 points in 716 NHL games.

Another fan thought Detroit should beef up its attacking roster instead of trying to fetch another goalie with the extra dough. The Islanders’ Matthew Barzal was a first-round pick of 2015 and currently sits atop a 134 career goal tally. “Barzal to Detroit is cooking,” reads one fan’s comment who thinks the Red Wings could do well to get the 27-year-old on board.
