“Thompson is having trouble getting out of this out of his net and off the ice,” said the announcer with concern in his voice. Meanwhile, two Capitals teammates helped their star netminder, Logan Thompson, off the ice. In a match filled with drama, fights, and injuries, things went from bad to worse for the Washington Capitals as they tried all in vain to stop the Canadiens. The closing 15 minutes of the high-octane clash saw Montreal finally pull away from the Capitals as they scored three goals in quick succession.
Yet, the 6-3 loss in Game 3 might not hurt the Capitals too much. On the other hand, the prospect of Thompson not returning for the rest of the series could be devastating. Yet, why would this question even arise? Well, that’s because everything unraveled shortly after Alex Ovechkin equalized for the Washington Capitals. As Juraj Slafkovsky guided the puck into the net for the Canadiens’ 5th goal, Dylan Strome desperately tried to intercept the decisive pass. Unfortunately, the Capitals center went too fast, slamming into Logan Thompson, who fell backwards, twisting his knee.
“That knee, look at the left knee. The skate blade digs into the ice, and the weight of Strome is on him,” the announcer highlighted during the slow-motion recap. Recovering from the fall, Logan Thompson tried to skate off the ice, but immediately buckled when he put his weight on the left knee. Naturally, it begs the question: How badly did the star goaltender hurt himself?

Cariboo Cougars alumni Dr. Harjas Ghrewal gave his take, as there are no official updates yet. “Concern is an MCL injury and/or concussion for Thompson. MCL injury timelines depend on severity but are often week-to-week, especially for goalies. Concussions are often labeled day-to-day, but true protocol is 5+ days,” explained the physician who posts about NHL injuries.

Talking about concussions, Thompson also took two unintentional stick hits to the head. The last one came as Strome slammed into the goalie. Unfortunately, Logan Thompson missing multiple games threatens to derail the Capitals’ Stanley Cup dreams. That’s because the 28-year-old has had a stellar season with a 31-6-6 record, 2.49 GA average, and .910 SV%. What’s more? He was the best goaltender of the 2025 NHL playoffs heading into Game 3. No wonder; the loss feels more like a turning point.
After Logan Thompson’s mishap, the Canadiens bite back amid the chaos
After losing the first two games in the series with close margins, the Montreal Canadiens just showed what home advantage truly means in Game 3. Logan Thompson’s team took the lead, with Connor McMichael Bell opening the scoring at Bell Center. However, the Canadiens equalized with barely a minute left in the first period and took the lead in the second.
What’s your perspective on:
Can the Capitals survive without Logan Thompson, or is their playoff run doomed without him?

The rest of the match was all about the Washington Capitals chasing the Canadiens in front of a crowd that booed every time they equalized. However, the chaos truly took over when an all-out brawl broke out when the Canadiens were in a 3-2 lead. All hell broke loose when the fighting spilled over to the Capitals’ bench when the doors opened while Tom Wilson scrapped with Josh Anderson.

The Capitals had already made costly mistakes. Earlier, a bad clearing attempt allowed Lane Hutson to intercept the puck and feed it to Cole Caufield. It’s safe to say that after expressing his frustration in the last game, Caufield was more than happy to score the third goal for the Canadiens. And while Logan Thompson’s team did manage to score one more time, it would be for nothing.
While Thompson would concede two more goals before the devastating injury, the Canadiens weren’t done for the night. His replacement, Charlie Lindgren, couldn’t keep a clean sheet despite spending only a few minutes on the ice. Yet, as Alex Newhook buried the puck in the back of the net for the sixth time, the hockey team didn’t win the game unscathed either. In a weird coincidence, they also lost starting goalie Sam Montembeault in the second period. Yet despite the chaos, the Canadiens just made a statement that read, ‘We’ve got a series on our hands’.
