Sunday evening saw a double whammy in NHL. While the New York Rangers trounced the LA Kings 5-2 at Madison Square Garden, the Pittsburgh Penguins were also up to something similar. The Penguins, led by their captain, saw a famous 7-3 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning at their home stadium, PPG Paints Arena. En route to their victory, their captain also registered an enviable record, which only a handful of men can boast of having. His fans were over the moon upon learning about it.

Both teams were tied at 2-2 during the second period of the game. A famous goal from the Penguins’ captain saw them take a lead, while also registering his 26th goal of this NHL season. He also became the only active player to register a separate record. Fans haven’t been able to stop praising their favorite Ice Hockey player ever since the news hit them.

Sidney Crosby, who led the Pittsburgh Penguins to their stomping victory last night, also had something to cherish just for himself. He became the 14th overall player and the only currently active player to register 13 or more 70 point campaigns in his career. While several others have done it before him, for the 35-year-old to do it late into his career, is truly commendable. His fans feel the same way. Here’s how they reacted to a Facebook post by Pittsburgh Penguins:

The top 2 positions on the list of players to achieve a 70 point campaign 13 times or more are occupied by arguably the two greatest players of the NHL – Gordie Howe (18) and Wayne Gretzky (17). Several other hockey players like Phil Esposito, Stan Nikita, and Dale Hawerchuk among others, are at 13 with Crosby. However, just below them is one of the other modern-day greats who has earned that distinction 12 times and could quite easily break their records.

Alex Ovechkin and Sydney Crosby – the competition is likely to get intense

Alex Ovechkin, Washington Capitals captain, is already on his way to becoming one of the all-time greats of the NHL. In recent years, the Russian star has been on a record-breaking spree. He has already broken Gordie Howe’s record of all-time highest goals and is only behind Wayne Gretzky, who tops the list with 892 goals. Ovechkin also recently achieved a record 400 goals on home turf and has already surpassed Gretzky in the most number of away goals. He is the only NHL player to ever cross 400 goal mark in away games.

Often compared to Gretzky, the Capitals’ captain also once tried to shut down a question from a reporter about the same. It was also the first time he was doing an interview with Crosby. Crosby, who is beaming with joy after his recent record, was excited to see if Ovechkin breaks Gretzky’s all-time goals record in the history of the tournament.
